Hello:
I downloaded the Einstein@home program and had no difficulties until I tried to attach to a project (gravity wave monitor) and when I plug in the URL, it's rejected. Can someone please advise me as to the proper URL for the gravity wave monitor project? Thanks-Donna

Trouble Linking Project URL

Donna,
Probably, the most common problem in "not being able to attach" is related to a firewall. You probably need to configure your firewall to allow BOINC (boinc.exe) to communicate. If that isn't your problem, post again and copy/paste what is under your BOINC Manager "Messages" tab.

Thanks Stick- I did as you suggested and I still can't attach. The message on Boinc Manager reads: Project not found. The URL you supplied is not that of a boinc based project. Please check the URL and try again.

Donna,
Are you copying and pasting the "Project URL" and "Account Key" from your "Einstein@Home account confirmation for Donna" e-mail?

Yes... I even tried shutting down my firewal and it still would not work...

OK - sometimes problems "getting connected" are a little difficult to solve, although, inevitably, the final solution is something really simple. So, just bear with me. Right now, it is very difficult to determine whether your computer/internet connection is the source of the problem or if there something is wrong with your installation of the BOINC program.
First, I want to show you what things will look like once you have connected. Click on my name (the blue "Stick" at the left of this post), then, in next window, click on "View" Computers. You should see some info about the two computers I have attached to Einstein and if you explore further, you can see some of the results my computers have returned, etc. Now, if you click on your name, etc. you'll see what it looks like when you haven't connected yet.
Right now, I'd like to check some other possibilities relating to setting up your BOINC program. First make sure that the BOINC "Network Activity Suspended" option is not checked. (This function might have a slightly different name, depending upon which version of BOINC you are using.)
Also, let's check to see if your computer connects to the internet through a "Proxy"? If you are using Windows, you can check this by opening your "Internet Options" Control Panel and looking under the "Connections" tab/then at "LAN Settings" (unless you are using dial-up). If Proxy is set, then you need to configure BOINC under the "Options" menu with the same settings. On the other hand, if you do not use a "Proxy", then make sure that BOINC's Proxy settings are not checked.
If, after doing these things, you still haven't connected, send us a little more info about your system - Windows, Mac, or Linux, and BOINC version. Also, send us more of your BOINC Messages.

Thanks for all your help Stick. I checked all the points you suggested and everything is okay with my settings and so forth. (I'm running on Windows 98 upgrade and I downloaded the recommended version of BOINC:5.2.2) I didn't have any trouble with the download, went very smooth and the screensaver works too... Would you recommend uninstalling and reinstalling the same or a different version? Seems to me this is a simple glitch. Sorry for the trouble.-Donna

Donna,
In case you don't know, BOINC 5.2.2 is brand new (it just succeeded BOINC 4.45 as the recommended version yesterday). And, I just installed it myself yesterday. Therefore, you probably have one of the first, completely new/not upgraded installations of it, especially using Win 98. Therefore, I hope you will stay with this process and help find us out if there are any "bugs" that haven't been uncovered yet. Hopefully, some others with more experience using the BOINC 5 series than I have are also reading these posts.
First, I would like you to try one more thing. I would like you to try to register with and attempt attaching to another project. If you are successful with another project, we can assume the problem is related to Einstein. If not, we can assume the problem is somehow related to your BOINC/Win 98/Internet set up. I would suggest you try the Seti project.

Hello Donna, Hi Stick, In

Hello Donna, Hi Stick,
In following this thread, it seems to me that it keeps on coming back to the incorrect url. One thing we've missed, and Stick is always very meticulous about checking it (in fact I modelled after him on this), is whether you may have included a blank space or omitted a character when you pasted the project url. Boinc is very particular about this.
Donna, I know that this is growing increasingly frustrating, but would you please try attaching again with this url:

Michael,
Have you or (anybody you know) ever attached a project using 5.2.2? (My projects were already there when I upgraded from 4.45.) Anyway, I just opened the attachment screens, and saw that they are not at all like BOINC 4.45 - allowing the use of e-mail addresses, etc.

Stick,
I haven't done any with 5.2.1 - still haven't checked 5.2.2, but I'm a one-project cruncher.
Gray, on my Cafe/5.2.1 thread, has several projects going and has updated to 5.2.2, and shuffled 5 or 6 projects around since yesterday - you might ask him.
