It is very hard to comment

It is very hard to comment in depth without being political which we don't allow here, just hard facts. The PM's statement this morning at Downing Street said

"There has been far too much tolerance of extremism in our country over many years and that means extremism of any kind including Islamophobia."

Easy to say. but not easy to deal with, and  in a way that all people of all faiths will accept.

Last night on the News they

Last night on the News they said that one in seven people in London are now Muslim

They're not evenly spread out, Mikey. I think the census of 2011, or thereabouts... (I could go and check exactly - but I'm a bit hot) for my borough put the figure at about one third Muslim. It's not just about influx - a lot of that is to do with people of other faiths (and paler in shade) moving out to places like Essex and Kent. In my little bit of the borough, we get on in relative*, or even complete harmony :) I love the diversity around me, and we have so many languages to puzzle over too :)

I forgot to mention that I got a phonecall from my daughter! She was ringing from the highest point of The Great Wall of China and wanted to wish her dad happy father's day :) I think it was the highest point. It's not impossible it was the highest point she was prepared to get to... but I was impressed either way :)

she's working there until mid-September, [edit: not on the wall... she was just visiting that] then will return to Spain until next March, when she goes back to China for another couple of months I think. We do miss her :/

* I only say that because you can't rule out the occasional stray bigot when living in a city... or anywhere really...

Please wait here. Further instructions could pile up at any time. Thank you.

Ahem. Moving right along

Ahem. Moving right along ........ saw this yesterday on the cover sheet of a fax I received :

*Email should not be relied upon to communicate in the event of a clinical emergency.*

.... while not evidently directed at me personally, I hope, it does indicate that someone thinks that some doctors need to be told this. Mind you, I guess I can still twitter during CPR. It's not all bad then.

Cheers, Mike.

I always have to Google to find out where the left ventricle is. The atrium is near the foyer by the lifts.

And I always thought that

And I always thought that doctors knowing left from right was a prerequisite.

Looks like I was wrong or it is only a myth put about by doctors and dentists.

The good news? The orchiectomy was successful.

".... the doctor claimed that the testicles had switched sides at some point .... the jury — which comprised 11 women and one man — deliberated for about 1 hour 20 minutes before siding with the plaintiff."

What's even more bizarre is that it went to court. DownUnda that's a lay down misere ..... pay up and shut up .... which total tool thought that would ever be viewed as defensible : by judge or jury or anyone really. Also note that the alleged reason for removal was that the bad one was quite abnormal in size & structure c/w with the other, so did not the surgeon look at what he was cutting out and say to himself "Hey, that's pretty normal looking gear !"

Cheers, Mike.

( edit ) That reminds me : the lost pre-anaesthetic consult for elective surgery. In Australia this happened about mid-1980s whereupon it was deemed that a mere intern could assess anaesthetic risk properly. I remember in my hospital years being very nervous about doing these, especially since I had not done any meaningful anaesthetic training. I certainly grasped the idea that respiratory and cardiovascular health is important here, but I always worried that I might miss some key nuance. It seems the wheel has turned though, alas due to court/coroner's findings that indeed a specialist anaesthetist could not delegate away clinical duty of care for the primary aspects of their role ie. patient safety. Needless to say the original main reason for not doing them since circa 1985 was money : you can charge way more for performing an anaesthetic than for thinking carefully in advance of one. A secondary cause was that anaesthetic specialist trainees are required to do a certain number of actual anaesthetics, not any certain number or quality of consults, so I guess they learn to cut that corner from an early stage.

Dr. sent me an e-letter. Said the samples were normal and the polyps were benign, but one was pre-cancerous. Get checked again in five years.

Prior to a Dupuytrensop 8

Prior to a Dupuytrens op 8 years ago, both the Surgeon and the Anaesthetist came to see me in the Day Surgery ward, and a large black arrow was painted on my left arm pointing to my hand. The main reason was that there was going to be remedial surgery on my other hand in about 2 years time, and they wanted to make sure that they did the most needy one first.

But I think there is an important message that both the British people and the world need to know.

The numbers of Muslim people in the UK are only about 5% of the total population. But they prefer as a group of people, to live in their own areas where there is a common language, customs, and cuisine of their choice. It is 1 in 7 or 14% in the Greater London area where 40% of the UK's Muslims live, and 30% of the population particularly in Tower Hamlets. So because of that, the perception of density across the country as a whole that most people have is quite different from the actual figures. And it is these misguided perceptions that our children are growing up with that forms their views and what they say and do. This is one of the biggest problems facing Britain today.

WOO HOO!!!

Thanks Chris for looking up those number about the percentage of Muslims, that's MUCH different than what the National News was implying with their reporting right after the incident the other night!! I wonder if that is how 'fake news' gets started....sloppy fact checkers stopping at the first fact they find?

Oh and since I've never hd a Pims I will try one since you are buying this round, THANKS!!

My distinct pleasure my dear Sir. But of course if you are going to do it properly, you really need to wear a Boater and go punting up the Thames at the Royal Henley Regatta, don't you know, old chap :-)

Oh by the way, Pimms originally came in 6 flavours

  • Pimm's No. 1 Cup based on Gin
  • Pimm's No. 2 Cup based on Scotch whisky
  • Pimm's No. 3 Cup based on brandy
  • Pimm's No. 4 Cup based on rum
  • Pimm's No. 5 Cup based on rye whisky
  • Pimm's No. 6 Cup based on vodka

Pimms No.1 is basically what is known as a "Gin Sling" and is the most popular of the versions.
