The sadder news is that the younger graduates who might have replaced the likes of me when I either dement or fall off the perch are quite sensibly doing something else with their lives. For more money probably but certainly to avoid an industry which has been well corrupted for over a generation now by sheer stupidity of over-over-oversight & micromanagement by numpties.
Time was in the UK when people went into the medical profession as a calling, e.g. the likes of Florence Nightingale and Edith Cavell. Time was when hospitals were run properly by the medical staff, shades of Hattie Jacques as Matrons and James Robertson Justice as consultants. But as life progressed it was seen as inefficient to have highly trained medical people spending their time discussing the colour of the new canteen curtains and how many toilet rolls to order.
So they moved to using Hospital Administrators, at the same time people started to look upon nursing and other medical tasks as merely a job that paid X per week.
The result is that we now have hospitals run by jobsworths being paid 5 times what they are worth, who have no idea of what a hospital is all about i.e. sick patients. And staff in care homes that treat old people in the most abominable way possible. It is fast becoming the uncaring profession.
But I cannot speak highly enough of my own local NHS hospital. Over the last 15 years I have had to have 4 separate operations on my hands for a rather aggressive form of Dupuytren's Contracture. The consultant Hand Surgeon is absolutely excellent, and I can't praise him highly enough. Each op would have cost me £5K privately.
Waiting for Godot & salvation :-)
Why do doctors have to practice?
You'd think they'd have got it right by now
Legoleptic refers to "A LEGO maniac or someone who has seizures about LEGO".
Like when you propel your entire weight - whilst perambulating unshod - onto a piece or ten? Yes. Been about 18 months since my last one... oddly not too dissimilar to standing on the prongs of an electric plug...
As regards the medical profession: I still think it's a calling. But with government meddling (ours is a disgrace by the way - no wonder that doctor yelled at our leader/s a few years ago heh heh heh - he was my hero :) - and thing's will only get worse from there - it's no wonder all our medical students and junior doctors were protesting last weekend. And what with the nasty rash of numpties proliferating all over the place pulling rugs out and whatnot - it may become one where just expressing a desire to go into medicine will get you sectioned.
Chris: As regards your "maybe TMI, David" - I'm not sure we had enough :)
YES! I KNOW I NEED TO POST IN THE TLPTLWTLPYT THREAD... I'm doing it in a minute although it might take longer than that, I don't understand how someone as poorly as someone is, has the energy to ring me - just as I am about to go visit them - so they can pick an argument and yell stuff that must make me sound to staff and patients within earshot, like I am SUCH a b**ch. I don't use phones for that* *sad blink* It's not like it's not happened before - but now I don't know whether I even want to visit him even though I do - but if I don't, then I am :( because I'm a bit grumpy you see... too

My dear Madam, please curb your enthusiastic desire to enquire further into fellow posters unclad torsos. Good Lord, before you know it, the dowager ladies of East Grinstead will be overcome with the vapours and reaching for the Sal Volatile.

I have run out of time. The school bell has just rung, and it's Friday. I may check this evening, if Seti remains as slow as it has been, but otherwise I'm outta here for the weekend.

Chris probably won't want to read the rest of this paragraph. I'm sure it will be QUITE TMI even for Annie if I mention that at that time, I was probably just putting on my first sock, which is the first thing I put on in the morning.

A calling. Indeed. It is a strange thing what one might be motivated about. For me it was probably the example of a doctor whom I saw when I was a child. I wasn't terribly ill in real terms, just felt crap alot because of tonsils which were eventually removed. From then on I didn't need to see doctors much. Then I became one. Underneath I think I identify with the patients because of how I felt as a child. No surprise that I now see predominantly children. I don't think my impetus is unusual, you will sense it with many other professions : nursing, paramedics, police, firefighters, armed services ....
.... what is different is new barriers to enter and remain in effective operation as a practitioner ( new as in appeared in my lifetime ). Personally I view this as part of a general trend toward the pollution of special areas of life to engage for other means eg. a health policy primarily put in place to generate 'we love you' votes for political parties. The pollies are always keen to capitalise ( often personally and literally so ) upon The Santa Claus Dividend ie. the benefits of being the one to throw away other people's money. Which is no true sacrifice at all, and is done with the solemnity/bravado of 'fixing a problem'.
Now as for our One-Sock David I fear I must endure that vision in dignified silence. :-):-)
Cheers, Mike.
