Selecting 2nd is useful when starting off in slippery conditions. Going from 1 to 2, then to D gives better acceleration when you need it. We are talking family cars here not the £100,000 upmarket stuff with sports modes.
I had a Ford Granada 2.8 once with an auto box, the kick down was useless. I drove it like a stick shift, so much better with more control.
Waiting for Godot & salvation :-)
Why do doctors have to practice?
You'd think they'd have got it right by now
Auto boxes are useful if the vehicle does lots of town driving, for the open road four or 5ive on the floor is much preferred. Plenty of scooters have auto gears these days unlike the manual changes of the Vespas and Lambrettas in the 70's.

So after having made a mild Dad-type joke to a nine year old about zombies ( forthcoming apocalypse etc ) he proceeded to tell me all about it. That being : the proper way to go about killing The Undead. Basically if the flamethrower doesn't work, or is taking too long, then you go for the pump-action shotgun and/or katana sword. Ok, got that .....
Then he volunteered yet more information about modding Nerf-Guns, which is basically a gadget like this :
The nerf darts have a soft rubbery tip which you remove ( because it's a safety feature put there by the manufacturer to prevent injuries ) and what remains is a small depression into which various things may be placed. Like a certain sized spherical lead sinker from the fishing shop ie. producing a proper injury prone projectile.
So I pay close attention to this because :
- I'm likely to see the clinical results of these weapon developments. Sooner rather than later is my guess.
- I can buy shares in both Nerf guns and lead sinkers before this Xmas rush.
- since I'm bound to be immune to the zombie virus by now ( occupational exposure ) then I'll need to know the detail of how to kill all the rest of you who will succumb to the virus.
- this nine year old may be a future world leader ( zombie or no zombie ). Get on their good side when they're young is my strategy.
- watch out especially for nine year old zombies as they clearly will have all the counter intelligence.
Cheers, Mike.

Dangerous stuff those toys! Do you have a right to bear arms down under?
Here in the Netherlands we need a permit, and arguing that I definitely need one because I have two daughters to protect from nasty (in my opinion) boyfriends won't likely get me one around here.

The koalas do. We don't.
