thanx to my huge IT-backrground namely combined 40 year of IT eXpertiséé as IT chief-component buyer for majyor govrnmentally insittuations worldwide (annual spending budget: 80 billion USD) and as CEO, CFO at mayjor silickon valley companies such as:

- microsofort ("go bill go. linus is your biggst fan!")
- COMPAQ (...i miss ya!")
- DEC ("where is the alpha AXP guyss/girls??")
- SCO/CALDERA ("lawusits R fun"")
- MEDION ("LIDL RULEZzzZ")

i thnk that a computer with MICROSOFT WINDOWS 98 SE (proffessional editition) is the most and best machine to work for this projeckt and calculate most efffecitkivley, effieciently and (the most important thing) most >>CORRECTLY (by the way windows comes with a build in scienencetific calculator: go to START --> menue--> defragmatiation--> calculator)

anyways, i am open minded so every other better recommmendation (are there any...? muhihahhih*) is welcme and i am looking forward to bring my IT horizont further!***

thx and have a great sunny sunday!

Dear Schnitzel,

well noticed your funny little cattiness. WOW, looks like I´m standing in the line of fire, but that`s ok, I´m quite used to it.

I noticed, like you did but earlier, that this old box didn´t return correct results. So it´s now crunching for SETI, which is not as picky as Einstein.
But to answer your question: For some people, like me, WIN 98 SE is perfect just in case some wise guys are spending their time pinging other guys firewall. In this case WIN 98 just don´t cares (this is my experience). So if WIN98 don´t cares, I don´t care either.

pinging is not so bad or? it is just to check how fast your 28,8 kb modem works...i think it is much more much worser if somebody wants to get your credit card number or the PINS for the citibank acount and then GET ALLL MY MONEY!

this is also a reason for using the BOMBSECURED windows 98. but u r right: there are many adventous of windows.

Hehehehehe You don't have an iBook at all!!!!!!98!!!! ***

But you are right. Win98 ist the best OS for running Einstein -- nobodys wants to work with this OS, so the computer has a good idle.

BTW: What are the best Sneakers for running Einstein? Any suggestions?

Since we are paziFISTs (both, atomic and solar type) no one is in the line of our fire.

This is a good motivation to think about yourself.

Done.
May I suggest to read the following book:
J.F. Kennedy: Profiles in Courage, New York 1964
For the German reader:
John .F. Kennedy: Zivilcourage, Düsseldorf 1964

My experience with Win95/98/Me has been patchy, but I do know that after a while it becomes unstable... Which is not what you need for a machine which, by definition, needs to be on for long periods of time to crunch enough numbers for someone to make a significant contribution to a project. I wouldn't put Win98 on one of my machines now, as hardware vendors are starting to cease support for the OS. Microsoft ceased support for it a while ago I think. Anyone with a modern machine wo retrofits it with Win98 is doing the hardware an injustice (unless they have a specific reason) as Win98 cannot directly support features such as Hyperthreading (Intel) or Hypertransport (AMD). Both of which provide speed/productivity benefits.

So... I ask you... How can you recommend an OS that doesn't support the key features of modern processors???

I think my credit score speaks for itself!!

well, what makes me comfottbale using MISCROSFOT WINDOWS 98 is that they ACTUALLY CEASED the support for this OS.

why?

because this shows that there are no probs with this OS! it is stable, users dont need the support, there are no more questions to come up because this OS has shown to the people that it runs perfectly on any other COMPUTER....worldwide (by the way: 98% of the worldwide computer in use are run with windows).

take for eXample linux: they NEEED the support stuff (cos it has troubles - problems - angry users) and every now and then (almost every day) they bring an "update" to their cernel! they are still at 2,4xxxx (or even lower) and linux user calll so often redhad, caledera, or LINUSSSSS whre are you?? and so on! (by the way: waste of telephonmoney. instead they should have saved the money and bought legaly - NO ILLEGAL COPYING BECAUSE IT IS EVIL!- an exculsively windows package)

anyways, windows 98 is an experienced OS (we have now 2005 so more than five year old OS..it is like red wine in the chatoux of de la champagne...the longer it lasts the better it gets) and can be run and use all the great power of the newest processors (with 256 cache, 1024 kbyte inter memory and overclocking up to 45 mhz). however windows just neeeds very low energy consumption and the defragmantation programm is the industry standard when it comes to reorganizing the hard disc properly.

So all in all win 98 is the winner OS. and it seerves most perfeltly for this EINSTEIN @ home projeckt because of the above stated arguments.

i have to say that your credits are pretty high but i think thats because you started calculating many weeks before me for example.

anyways, i aprecisiiate your comment and i am lookin forward of your responding to my essay.

greetin and have a goood evening,

i can only reply with a big LOL to this post, theres not much more to say to this ignorant point of view... if you dont have a clue where linux came from and why its the way it is today just dont try to talk about it... its FREEWARE and you dont pay hundreds of dollars for a big sortiment of bugs... and to say that win98 is such stable is also just not true.. you just have to install it and wait some months and the problems get bigger and bigger... Windows XP fortunately is better in this point.. i dont mean that Windows doenst have advantages (especially XP) but your point of view is just... as i said... ignorant
