Firefox or Opera browsers !!!???? ! What are these??

LOL!!! Oh, but you are getting slick with the emoticons!

Firefox and Opera are 2 of the alternatives to Internet Deplorer, with a few nice options that IE lacks, and without the deep history of security holes that have plagued IE for years. They are not without security problems of their own, but the developers seem to respond more quickly to them. Also, both Firefox and Opera use less system memory than IE. If you are interested, let me know and I will give you info on downloading and setup a little later.

To get back to your immediate problem - in IE (Internet Explorer), click on the "View" button on top. Ticking the "Status Bar" will restore the bottom bar. Click on the "View" button again, and hover the cursor over the "Toolbar", then slide the cursor over to tick the "Standard Buttons" and "Address Bar" and then "Lock the toolbars". That should bring you back into familiar territory.

Ever Michael

A word of caution here. If I remember correctly from some of the earlier posts relating to getting Ariane's system ready to run BOINC/Einstein/Seti, there was not much spare RAM or Disc headroom to work with. Therefore, I wonder if trying to download and install one of these other browsers might be a little risky.

Ariane,

Here is the Firefox page, where you may read about and, if you wish, download Firefox.

I am sure that if you started a thread in CafeSeti about which browsers are used, you would see a wide diversity, and not nearly as much IE as you might suppose. Firefox and Opera are the 2 most-used alternative browsers, Mozilla somewhat less, even a very few die-hard Netscape users out there. There is another newer browser I cannot remember the name (Maxthon?), but it has become trendy.

Firefox is almost infinately customizable because the code is open-source and they encourage others to develop add-ons, extensions, and themes. However, all those add-ons also add-on size, taking up more disk space, and the small size of Firefox is the primary reason that I recommend it for you. Firefox is available in 33 languages, from Afrikaans to Turkish (but not yet in Farsi). You are certain to have your choice of languages with which you are familiar and fluent.

Sorry to have taken so long to reply. I was distracted by my landlord in need of computer help. :-)

Thank you Stick, perhaps you 're right, but if i remove IE for example and downloading Firefox or Opera, would it be risky ? It is true that for the moment i have only 780 free space on my local disk and 192 MB of Real memory and 384 virtual memory . Anyway the most important thing to me is continuing my EAH and Seti crunching habitually , and i don't want to put it on risk . On the other hand trying new things is always exciting even though i should assume some risks.

Dear Ariane,

Stick is entirely correct in his concern about preserving your disk space, as am I, but I remembered that you still had several hundred MB room there. Firefox is 4.7MB, very slightly larger than that installed, so it would cost you perhaps 1-2% of free space. Unfortunately, removing Internet Explorer is not an option - Microsoft has craftily made IE an integral part of Windows (cause for much debate and some lawsuits against them, BTW) and it cannot be removed. At any rate, IE is necessary to access Windows Update, so it is a beast we have to tolerate, but not embrace. ;-{

Ariane,

I guess my memory isn't what it used to be. You system is better than I what I was remembering. If it meets the Firefox's minimum system requirements there shouldn't be a problem. However, I don't think you should think about removing IE quite yet. You should try out Firefox (or Opera) first and make sure you can make it do everything you now do with IE before deciding on removing IE. That way, you will minimize the "risks".

Stick

EDIT: I came back a little late here - but it's seems that Michael and I are in agreement on "how to proceed".
