AAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH .... just a wee whisker .... I can't stand the suspense .... quick Chris, just shoot me please ...... if you haven't a gun, then please hack my head off with a balsa wood spoon ..... I beg of you ..... :-)

Groan ... mere Brownian motion is not going to work ..... the Gods of statistical mechanics hate me .... maybe the vicinity of Annie is too random even for mere molecules to venture .... I've said before that even Heisenberg doesn't apply near her .... she is a gateway to the other Universe !

Oh, sorry Annie. I didn't see you there. Did you hear all that ? What a surprise. You've been there all along have you ? Terrific. No, no it is all good. Fine and splendid. We were talking about a different Annie. Someone else altogether. Same name for sure, but otherwise no connection with you at all ............................................................................................................. good. I'll take your stony monolithic silence & riveted demonic glare as agreement. That's all fixed then. What was that you were saying Chris ? You know, about the weather and stuff. How molecules move and whatnot. Do tell me Chris .... and while you about it, could you be a luv and put me out with that fire extinguisher over there. Yep, the red one .... nope .... nope ..... take a firm hold ..... point it over this way .....

Cheers, Mike.

ROSARMALIENTION
RASORMALIENTION
ROTARMALINESION
RESTORMALINORIN
RENORMALISATION

Brit/Aussie spelling strikes again. I didn't even recognize the word until several seconds after I wrote it because to me it should be spelled with a Z.

RENORMALISATION WOOOOO

RENORMALISATION

WOOOOO ..... WOOOOOO ....... WE HAVE A WINNER !!!!!!

Well done David. You just rule the quantum waves.

Mr Richard Feynman discovered a mathematical method of partitioning an infinite sum of terms into two sets. Firstly the ones that together added up to something finite and reasonable, we leave those as is. The others added up to infinity .... damn them ... and so he replaced that lot of them in such a way so as to yield a grand total being a finite number as derived from experimental observations. He was allowed to do that because of a 'free parameter' ie. one that was not specified by theory but could be obtained by observation. In his own words he was granted the Nobel Prize for 'sweeping infinity under the rug'. More or less the same tactic has been extended from electromagnetism to the nuclear forces also. Gravity cannot be renormalised and thus remains outside of the quantum fold to date.

{ FWIW Dirac thought this approach was rubbish, despite the fact that it worked, and felt that we were missing something better or truer. Being quite a mathematical purist he rightly pointed out that while we should be allowed to discard small numbers when approximating our models to the real world, tossing away an infinity is not such a case. Fair call. }

Cheers, Mike.

( edit ) Well that was fun. What will I do for the rest of the year now ? :-))))

2nd edit: When you made this happen, David... you could do no wrong in my eyes...

edit 3 (for edit 1 of edit 1): *IT'S TOO NORMAL FOR A SCIENCE WORD - IT'S NOT LATINY ENOUGH OR ANYTHING

edit 4 (for edit 1 of edit 2) : Well done David :) I really really mean that... I do :)

edit of all prior edits: A most delectably devious word Mike. You have my grudging admiration :) The minute you mentioned the things you mentioned - I was doomed to wander into the darker regions of gobbledygook - and emerge with a dangerous level of non-knowledge of apogee-perihelion-effigies. You have done well too :)

Please wait here. Further instructions could pile up at any time. Thank you.

May I extend my most discombobulated apoplectic catenary fozz-wodgets to yourself also. I do strive for delectable deviosity especially if there is an admirable grudge to be apogeewhizzeed. Even if dark wandering dooms were un-anti-expectated regionally or ...... err ...... hidden in plain sightedishness .... ness .... osity. Thing. :-)

Well, I was all prepared like with one of these.

And also with one of these

But while I was trying to decide which one you actually meant someone came along and mumbled something about Renormalisation. I mean, how can anyone put something back to what it has never been around here since time immemorial?

Well done David by the way!

I can't stand the suspense

Yes most can only sit down in suspenders. If you stand up the girdley thingy slips, so I've been told. You'd think by now they'd have invented tights wouldn't you.

Waiting for Godot & salvation :-)

Why do doctors have to practice?
You'd think they'd have got it right by now

I rather had a feeling that you were reading too much into the apogee/perigee thing. It seems I better took his meaning as merely an indication of your guess that he was replying to being one of your closer ones rather than one of your more, shall we say, spacey ones.

New thread coming in a few, as soon as I pick from the candidates aswirl in my mind.
