Annie inquires what my parents were thinking in giving me my middle name. I answer: it was my mother's father's name. He died when she was... well, I don't remember, but I'm pretty sure she was no more than 2. My aunt is four years younger and came from my grandmother's second husband (whom I came to refer to as Grumpy late in his life).

Speaking of my aunt, she was moved to a nursing home yesterday. She expects to be there a few days for some therapy.

And now getting back to Wally Raleigh: he lived in Ireland, "took part in the suppression of the Desmond Rebellions[, w]as present at the Siege of Smerwick... [and was] one of the principal landowners in Munster." -Wikipedia

And of course 397 years and 8 days ago his head was placed in a velvet bag, having been removed from his body at the insistence of the Spanish ambassador.

Somewhere in between those events, he is alleged to have been involved in the Main Plot* against King Jim.

BTW, 1965 was also before I was born.

*Which Chris will be scandalized to learn that I had never heard of before today.
