Anyone else not receiving work?

It's been about 24 hours since I returned last work unit and got credit for it. But I've never seen Einstein not give me another unit. I've been clicking Update all day and I get the 'requesting zero units of work' message every time.

I don't see anyone else complaining since yesterday so I am hoping it's not a malfunction on my end. Do I need to 'reset project'?

I've not tampered with Boinc at all. Seti and Protein Predictor working fine.

Thanks.

Anyone else not receiving work?

A request for 0 second of work means one of three things:

The computer has too much work on hand already to meet deadlines reliably.

The project has enough work on hand, and the computer is not desperate for work.

The project has used too much CPU time for its resource share recently and is blocked from requesting more for a while.

In all of these cases, the best thing to do is to leave it alone, and it will fetch more work when it is ready.
"JM7"

But!
Also check if you don't have your project set to No new work. Check that by going to the Project tab, selecting the project by clicking on it once, then checking that there is a button on the left called "Allow new work".
If there is, press it and work units will flow again.

If, for some reason, BOINC has run Einstein more than its allocated percentage of time recently, it may be trying to even things out by running the other projects. If this is the case, BOINC will request more Einstein work when things get back in balance. If you want to see if BOINC is able to get more work from Einstein (to eliminate the possibility of malfunction), you could try suspending all other projects temporarily. Einstein should request work if the other projects are kept from working. However, doing this will just delay the project balancing that BOINC is probably doing.

I think it must be that

I think it must be that Einstein has used more than it's fair share lately. The other explanations don't fit. I'll give it another day or two.

Thanks.

How long has this been going on? It appears you haven't processed a work unit in quite some time. Have you checked the list of possible problems listed by Ageless (on this thread in reply to Robert)? What other projects are you running? Have you made any changes to BOINC recently?

This person has enough for

This person has enough for everyone who is short of work.

How in the world does the scheduler allow this one to continue to download 16 WUs/day, when it's processed only 24 WU's during a 19-day span, never more than 3/day, and none at all in the past week? There is a 133 WU backlog, and the machine is incapable of processing more than 7/day, even if doing Einstein only, 24/7.
This is a big problem I have with the new 2-week deadline. The above asleep-at-the-switch user (has only the one machine to keep an eye on), in consideration for the project, needs at least to abort all the WUs, edit preferences, and then update, so that the server can get all of them back in the assignment queue. My guess is that at least half of the WUs will be strung out into November.
This concludes my rant-of-the-month. Thank you. :)

Now, Now, Michael, If you

Now, Now, Michael,

If you are going to have a rant about someone then you had better be sure they really deserve it :). In this case, here are some facts you can observe from his results list:-

  • *The last valid result he has completed was sent to him on 3 Oct 2005 18:37:04 UTC
*There are a number of results with a slightly earlier date that are not crunching
*They would have crunched before the one that did if they were really on his box
*Apparently he has a severe attack of ghost work units
*He is running BOINC4.25 which has no ability to receive fresh copies of ghosts
*He has a HT machine that has a limit of 16/day
*His machine has been trying to get work each day but he is not receiving the work

I've never seen a good explanation of exactly what causes ghosts except that it is some sort of network communication problem. The server thinks the work is sent but the client never receives it and this version doesn't have the capability to handshake with the server to report the problem. Hopefully he'll be concerned enough about not getting any work to come here and ask for help.

How did you become aware of this user's problem? He has a TC of 35K so he has been working solidly for the project and he deserves to be encouraged if we can get his attention.

Cheers,
Gary.

I wonder if this individual has figured out how to subvert the portion of the program that schedules/allots work ???

Hi, Gary

My rant :) was not with this person, but with the 14-day deadline vs scheduling, sorry I didn't make that more clear. I would not go off on any cruncher, no matter what the extent of their contribution, and I regret that it might have been perceived as such. :( I shall be more careful in the future.

How did I become aware? I routinely check who I am crunching with, to estimate what the granted credit will shape up to be and when to expect it. This user showed up on my most recently DLed WU, #2289149.
