My uploads and downloads don't seem to be working. They keep retrying with no success. I have allowed all network traffic for Boinc in both my firewall settings and my internet security software settings with no apparent change. Is the server just to busy?

I don't think it is the server. My computer completed a WU a few minutes ago and it uploaded without any problem. What is under your BOINC "Messages" tab?

Another thought: Regarding your firewall/internet security software settings, if you are using third party software for firewall/security, you might want to make sure that the Windows firewall is off. I remember having a problem a while back, after adjusting my NIS settings until I discovered that, somehow, the Windows firewall had "turned itself back on" during the process.

Tom, Ted seems to have moved from 4.79 to 0.18 beta about 2 days ago, 4.45 core client. Download speed too fast to be dialup, unless the 306.95 KB/sec figure is misleading.

Michael - Thanks for your keen observations of version number and download speeds, something I should have noted, but just was thinking. It seems that Ted as tried some of the standard items that I would have tried by adjusting his fire wall connections, but to no avail, yet it still seems to me to be a connection related problem?

Open to any and all suggestions.

Tom,
Several times I've had connecting problems, "May run out of work in 0.27 days;requesting more" scrolling ever downward, sometimes for hours, more often for 10-30 minutes. Ususlly it resolves itself, but for persistent cases, I usually exit the manager and restart it, at which point it usually connects immediately. I've never had my (short, 2-3WU) queue run out. I'm on cable/router connection, using 4.37 core client and 4.79 app, attached solely to Einstein.

Michael – Could be it, sounds reasonable, I’m on ADSL, 24/7, and have never experienced the frustration of “requiring more work” (lucky, I guess). In lieu of aborting the “Manager”, what would be the outcome of depressing the “Update button?

I've tried the update button, it has always been my first preference, but that has never worked - seems the manager is locked in the cycle and telling me "I'm already doing the best I can."

It's not really a problem for me because it's never gotten to the point where I've starved for work, even when I had the "connect to" set to 0.18 days. Just an anomoly, a quirk.
I thought it possible the exit/restart strategy might work for Ted.

I noticed something else a little strange: Ted apparently recommended the Beta Application to somebody on another thread today (something I usually do but didn't recommend to Ted). Also, did you notice that Ted has 2 computers listed (although one may not be "real")? Makes one wonder which computer is having the problem. One more thing, the computer that has results listed is obviously working for uploads of results. But it doesn't have any units in progress right now. Could be he not getting any new work because of a "debt" issue with other projects. Since Ted doesn't seem interested in telling us much, we may never know.

Stick, I noticed that Ted

Stick,

I noticed that Ted has 2 computers listed, both 2.00Ghx Celerons, but I concluded that they are the same computer. On second lookover, one thing strikes me as odd, though - the difference in benchmarks between the 2, the "newer" machine significantly lower. If they are really the same machine, it's possible that it now has a trojan or spyware infection, using his net bandwidth to "phone home", or possibly as a spam "Zombie".

Upstream rates are way slow compared to downstream, on both machines listed - maybe a satellite connection?

(Edit) Now I think of it, satellite connections often use dialup for upstream.
