A couple of times since I started, my "Results" have shown "Tasks" anywhere from 40-something to over 54 tasks. Now it shows only 43. What happened to all the others? Is there a grand total somewhere that I'm missing?

Secondly, does anyone know what I'm talking about? Is this such a simple question that I am the only one in the world that doesn't know where tasks go when they go?

Tasks

The records used to create the tasks page are only kept in the DB for a short period after the task is completed before being purged to keep the DB small and fast running. Your total credit, and the results of the tasks (for scientific analysis) are stored separately and not effected by this.

I think it is the case that the displayed information is that which has not yet been 'retired' from the database by one of the daemons ( I forget which one, probably the 'database purger' ). So what is no longer being displayed are those tasks for which the project considers is done and dusted.

Cheers, Mike.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

That means, I think, that

That means, I think, that since they are finishing the gravitational waves project, that seems to be in a week looking at the server status list, they will or have already taken a whole bunch of tasks from me since that phase is completed? Apparently my partners aren't finished yet, so pending is what gives me some of those tasks still on my results list. (also known as buckets?)

And then I will have only the gamma ray stuff and the new (to me) Arecibo thing that takes forever to complete? 29.5 hours compares to 4-5 hrs on the gamma ray thingies and maybe 2 tasks a day for the bucketts?

First, do you understand my question? I barely understand it myself.

If you do, Second will not be necessary...

I was reading one thing somewhere that says a some new application will use only GPU's. Will I be out of this low-paying job then?

No fadedrose, you will not be able to run any of the GPU tasks unless you install one of these many video cards with your computer.

(which also means you probably would have to install a new power supply that is able to run the card)

So, it's getting either a card or unemployment insurance? It's that simple is it?

I will inquire about getting a card - I saw them on your link and someone sent them to me before. Any personal recommendations? And does that mean I will no longer use my CPU's? I have loved this program and the way it's put together (could use a glossary tho) and hate to see the way it is now end.

When is doomsday for my CPUs?

Not in the foreseeable future. In fact they just re-enabled another CPU project: Binary Radio Pulsar Search (Arecibo). The only GPU project now is: Binary Radio Pulsar Search (Perseus Arm Survey). If you do get a GPU you can run both CPU and GPU apps, although you may have to reserve a CPU core or two to support the GPU.

Never!! Let the dxxx'd GPU's

Never!! Let the dxxx'd GPU's stand on their own footlike contacts. My CPUs refuse to share (at least as long as there's something to be selfish with).

I got one of those for CPU from Arecibo yesterday..it'll be done in l-l/2 hrs for a total of 27 hours. My pet gravitational waves were done in less than 12 hours and got a whole bunch of credit - 250 each, and they added up fast alright. Am anxious to see how much I get when the Arecibo gets validated.

Thanks for the good news.

Yes you would still be able to run 2 CPU tasks of the BRP's with your dual-core even after adding one of those video cards (and power supply)

And at the same time you could also be running 2 of those BRP's via the GPU

As far as which one it depends on how much you want to pay.

Power supply can be found at a fair price by finding the sales (I have several ULTRA X4's and X3's with the lifetime guarantees and they were all under $100 each)

Video cards can be expensive and I have not really got the real expensive ones (except I guess my GeForce 660Ti SC was at about $300)

My best as far as price and how fast it runs the tasks is my EVGA GeForce 550Ti 2GB SC which I got for $110 on a sale and it is faster than my other 550Ti 1GB SC and my 650Ti SSC 2GB and that one was just under $180.

The only other one I have is the GeForce 610M in my laptop which is the slowest of my grid but then it has been running 24/7 for almost 1 year now doing BRP X2 and 7 or 8 Gamma Rays and a Test4Theory task all at the same time.

So that means I guess you have to stay with us notsofadedrose

(oh and I think the credit for your CPU task is still going to be 500 each and Gamma Rays are 80 each)

Thank you so much for your

Thank you so much for your thoughtful response.

If my pc weren't so old, and me is also so old (75 very soon) I would consider getting one of those contraptions you described, or have my pc guy fix me up with another new old computer which might be cheaper in the long run.

Here's what has me worried - a quote from the Einstein page:

Quote:
Einstein@Home is slowly but steadily finishing the current Gravitational Wave search. The data used for this search will not be re-used for subsequent searches. This means that our "locality scheduling" won't be as effective as before to keep the download volume low. In this finishing phase you may receive tasks that require you to download 100MB or more to process. If you don't want this to happen, you may suspend the Einstein@Home project for a week or opt-out of that application in your EInstein@Home preferences (on "your account" page).

Why would I not want this to happen? Is my pc not capable of downloading the 100 MB? I want to stay with Einstein and the downloads from Aricebo are very long, well over 30 hours...why would I want to "suspend"?
