hi everyone!
i just got einstein@home. i dont get the screensaver so i read some threads. most of which are really old and say to get a beta version like 2.xx. i have version 4.79 now.
anyway, when i click "show graphics" ich the work tab of boinc manager i get the msg:
"Are you sure you wish to display graphics on a remote machine"
i have no idea what that means but maybe my not getting the screensaver has something to do with that?
btw i use
windows
ati radeon 9600xt
boinc v5.2.8
einstein@home v4.79
i hope you can help me.
thx!

I don't uderstand where you might have seen the "beta 2.xx" comment, but, you are mistaken. The latest Beta is v0.18 and that is what you need to fix your problem. Here is the link: Einstein@Home Beta Testing.

This sounds like you have BOINC Manager connected to a computer other than the one where you are running BOINC Manager... Look in the bottom right corner of the window and verify it says "Connected to localhost". If it says anything else, you need to "Select Computer" and pick "Localhost" or blank from the dropdown. If it complains about a password, a reboot is in order.

Hello Bill
Yep I too am getting this message, and it clearly says connected to localhost at bottom right in BOINC manager. There is no network here, just me, this box and the modem...
Funnily enough it only appeared when I got 5.2.8 of BOINC - I'm getting 5.2.10 now in the hopes that will solve the issue.

Hello
I just upgraded to the new BOINC and still get the same message:
"Are you sure you wish to display graphics on a remote machine"
Connected to localhost shows in the statusbar of BOINC bottom right, so think this is just a bug - but doesn't affect screensaver, once I have allowed to access to the localzone in in the firewall - and show graphics works fine

Gray,
Funny, I just responded to your last post on the Wish List board and now I see you over here. I think you should consider the possibility that the problem here could be a v4.79/BOINC library incompatibility issue.

Hello Stick
Yeah I get about quite a bit - probably all the coffee I'm downing jsut now...
But seriously, sorry, I thought this was another issue entirely, and also I wanted to see if the new version solved it - BTW version 5.2.11 is out now at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/?C=M;O=A
I'm getting it as I type this - hope springs eternal (sigh). In all honesty tho, the show graphics bug doesn't really impact: I use either the BOINC screensaver or Blank screen - hassling about the show graphics feature is more about getting a feature fixed rather than not being able to crunch for instance.
with apologies

I am not sure that it is a v4.79 problem, but it sure looks suspicious to me. It might be helpful for you to try the Beta and report back on whether it changes anything. If it doesn't help, or if you just want to go back to v4.79 anyway, that's relatively easy to do. Gary has a recent post on the Beta app thread (in response to a question from me) on how to remove it.
RE: "Are you sure you wish
)
This seems to be a bug introduced (maybe...) somewhere around V5.2.8. The "proxy box" problem, the "failure to connect to localhost" problem, etc., are all intertwined, and fixing one thing makes other issues show up. It's been reported and Rom is looking at it now. If there is a V5.2.12 out in a couple of hours, that's probably the one with the fix...
RE: RE: Hello

Thanks Stick, I appreciate the suggestion - but I think I will stick with the newly installed 5.2.11 BOINC and 4.79. when it comes to spending around 9 hours on something, I don't want a possible wobble at the end.
As I said, for me this is not really a big issue, and I just brought it up by way of confirming a previous poster. If I want to see the spinning universe I turn on the screensaver.
What does get me is the way every version of BOINC seems to give a slower benchmark, and hence a slower estimated crunch time (maybe this will improve after a couple of WU tho).
