Michael, Yes, it is kind

Message 18243 in response to message 18242

Michael,

Yes, it is kind of loopy, not only for the idea (which I think I follow) but also for this: Are you talking about Mobasoft (who had the Dual Monitor problem) or JP (who's problem is right here)? My guess is you mean JP.

Stick,

1 - We cannot "see" Mobasoft's host; the webpage shows him as having no host. If he had a host attached, we'd be able to see at least that it was "hidden". His page says Computers - View and links to a page with no listing.

2 - Mobasoft is able to request Einstein work, reschedule, reset project, detach from project. Therefore he must have a host attached to Einstein.

3 - 1 & 2 are inconsistent, mutually contradictory.

I am not sure that your view of "2" is really what is happening. That is, I think the messages are indicative of "failed" communication and are generated by the BOINC client (i.e. not from the server). But I could be wrong.

Unless...

Suppose Mobasoft inadvertantly opened a new account, new username, without knowing it, and attached the computer to that account. Is that possible?

As I said, it's a reach.

Michael

I'll have to think about this part.

Stick, Maybe I'd better

Stick,

Maybe I'd better check the label on my coffee - looks like I may have been dosed with decaf - making lots of typos and having to go back and edit them, to eliminate evidence of my gibberish. ;-] Yes, it was JP's problem that I was refering to, as you recognized.

RE: Stick, Did what you

Stick,
Did what you asked and no "proxy server" is checked.I already did the firewall "Exception".This might be a reach but before I moved to this address my "dsl was with earthlink" they send me a account number. Which as you can see is below.

This email confirms your account with SETI@home:
Project URL: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu
Account Key: 51add31b482cfb6c55ae567203aada9f

User name: jp
E-mail:

Would this cause my problem??? I have tried the account and the same thing happens ,I get the "master file fetch failed"

any guess would help at this point..

Thank you and talk at you later,

JP

JP,

If I understand you correctly, you attempted to attach Seti to BOINC (using the Seti URL and account key shown above) in the same way we attempted to attach Einstein to BOINC yesterday; and, you also got a "master file fetch failed" message from the Seti attempt. Is that right? (Please answer in your next reply.)

But, assuming your answer is going to be "Yes", I am really not sure what this tells us. If you had attached Seti to BOINC, it would have proven that BOINC is connecting to the internet OK and we would have known that the problem was related to Einstein. Since, neither Einstein or Seti will attach, we seem to be back to square one. That is, we really don't know if it's a problem with your BOINC software installation or if there is a problem external to BOINC that is blocking its ability to connect to the internet (although, we seem to have eliminated firewall/proxy problems as possibilities). And, since you said you also removed and reinstalled BOINC recently, it seems like corruption of the BOINC program can be eliminated, too. I am "grasping at straws" here but have you been using Windows Update regularly? Also have you been using Live Update for Norton Antivirus? If not, it might be worth a try (good thing to do anyway). Again, I am speculating, but have you noticed anything else strange about the way your computer is working? Slow operation with certain programs, etc.

As you have probably guessed, I am running out of ideas here. But, hopefully, some others will read these posts, too. A fresh point of view and would be good.

P.S. With regard to your e-mail address, you can (and should) update your e-mail address (if you need to) at "your account" both here and at the Seti web-site. But I don't think that an incorrect e-mail address could have caused the problems you are having.

JP,

Funny thing - I thought about the possibility you might need to set up a proxy, but, I never thought you might "have a proxy set up" that you don't need. I think you solved this one yourself - with only a little help from me.

The best "thanks" you can give, is to keep "browsing" these boards, learn a little more about "how things work" and offer some help when you see a problem you know the answer to. But, I do appreciate your thoughts of gratitude. Good luck and happy crunching!

Stick,

My friend, you've put in a lot of time and thought today, covered much ground, many threads, much help. Are your eyes blurring as much as mine are? It's about 11 p.m. here, and I'm about to turn in, have something left for tomorrow. Whoever it was who helped you and got you started must be saying "Job well done!" Keep on "Paying it Forward", amigo.

Michael,

Right back atcha!

I guess we tend to "wax more and more philosophical" as the day wears on. Or, maybe as the "caffiene wears off"? Past eleven here, too. But, what's this "turning in" stuff, when there's Leno and/or Letterman to watch?

Stick,

Guess I'm just a wuss. lol Cable 'net is all I can afford these days; cableTV just doesn't fit, and aside from "Nightline" or an occasional Jimmy Kimmel (and the Pistons playoff games), I've watched almost zero TV since Disney/ABC killed "Politically Incorrect". I don't even own one now.

I took a short break, dummied-down (unclocked) my PC, and played some Dungeon Siege a couple hours ago (for some reason, DS doesn't like to be overclocked by 35%), and the ring finger on my right hand has been uncomfortably cramped in the straight position since then. When I got JP and Mobasoft mixed up, it was clear that I was slipping.

It's been a productive day, 416 credits corralled, broke 60k. I'm scouting eBay to snag another A7N8X Deluxe mobo at a bargain price, to get my other rig out of retirement. There are 2 empty CAT-5 ports left on my router, why waste 'em both.

Jord (Ageless) posted on the 5.2.1 thread that he's about to hang it up as far as the message boards go, due to personality conflicts and personal attacks. That would be unfortunate - he's one of the better help guys around. Attrition takes a hard toll. It seems there are 3 kinds of folks here - those standing on one side or the other of the help counter, those who have some hard science or philosphy or humor to expand our minds, and those who mostly offer inane chatter and spiteful static.
