JP, I've looked around the

JP,

I've looked around the boards a little more and got a couple more ideas:

Are you attached to any other projects? If so, and the other projects are working, we can safely assume there is a problem with the way your are trying to attach Einstein to BOINC. If not, you might try registering with SETI for example. If you get the same kind of "master file" error message from another project, then we can assume your problem is a "connection" issue related to the way BOINC and/or your firewall is configured. Another possible connection issue we haven't discussed is this: Do you connect to the internet through a Proxy? If so, use the BOINC tools menu to configure the Proxy (the same way your browser is configures the Proxy).

@ JP, Can you try

@ JP,

Can you try following. Go to the command prompt and type

tracert einstein.phys.uwm.edu

In the window that is open, does it end with something similar as

12 111 ms 150 ms 123 ms chi-core-03.inet.qwest.net [205.171.20.178]
13 115 ms 106 ms 111 ms chi-edge-09.inet.qwest.net [205.171.20.126]
14 123 ms 116 ms 117 ms 63.145.159.18
15 129 ms 121 ms 117 ms space-needle-mke.csd.uwm.edu [216.56.1.194]
16 118 ms 123 ms 118 ms einstein.phys.uwm.edu [129.89.61.70]

The most important one is the last one. If you have einstein.phys.uwm.edu [129.89.61.70], then your host can connect to E@H and then we need to look further why Boinc Manager can't connect.

If you have something like
*** *** ***
then your host can't connect to E@H.

Let us know the result of the tracert.

Greetings from Belgium
Thierry

JP,

I thank Thierry for jumping in here because it has helped me think through the logic of this a little more clearly. I hadn't considered the possibility that you might be using 2 different computers before. That is, if, by chance, you are are posting on this thread from a different computer than the one on which you have installed BOINC, then trying Thierry's suggestion from your BOINC computer makes some sense. On the other hand, if there is only one computer (as I had assumed) then I don't believe Thierry's suggestion will prove anything. That is, (in the single computer scenario), we already know your computer can communicate with einstein.phys.uwm.edu (since you are able to post here using your browser). What we don't know is whether BOINC can communicate or not (because of possible firewall or other BOINC set-up issues). If you succeed at attaching another project attach (like Seti), we will know that BOINC can communicate and we can pursue issues specifically relating to attaching Einstein. However, if the other project also returns "master file fetch failed" messages, then we will concentrate on BOINC connection/commication issues.

JP,

I think you may have misunderstood the message from Thierry. So, for now, let's skip his suggestion and try attaching one more time. First open your account confirmation e-mail. Then open BOINC Manager and click on the Projects tab. Click on "Attach to new project". In the new "Attach to project" window paste "http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/" in the space next to "URL". Then, carefully highlight and copy your account key from the e-mail. Paste the account key in the space provided in the "Attach to project" window. Make sure there are no extra spaces either before or after the account key and then click "OK". (I know you have probably done this bunches of times but let's see if there is any difference this time.) Send us the messages again after you do this. If the firewall and virus protection is still off, please turn them back on soon. It's not a good idea to leave them off long. I don't think the virus protection has been interfering here but the firewall has probably been the obstacle. We need to figure out how to configure your firewall to allow boinc.exe to communicate. If the "attaching" works this time, we tackle that problem next.

Also I tried twice to get on,the first string of messages is from start up before I turned off the firewall.I think I'm talking to BOINC but something is preventing the download.. I give up what next??
later and thanks you for the info,

I also ran the command prompt, here are the results.

Tracing route to einstein.phys.uwm.edu [129.89.61.70]

JP, My guess is the last

JP,

My guess is the last line was "as predicted" by Thierry. That is, I am pretty sure your computer can connect OK but for some reason the BOINC program cannot. Let's eliminate the "Proxy" possibility next.

That is, open your Windows "Internet Options" control panel and look under the "Connections" tab. From the trace info, it appears you have a DSL connection, so click on "LAN Settings". In the next window, see if, by chance, the "Proxy server" box is checked and if there is any data in the "Address" and "Port" boxes. If the "Proxy server" box isn't checked, then we can eliminate "Proxy" as the cause. But, if it is checked, you need to program the BOINC Manager (under tools/options) with the same settings. (Note: I don't use a proxy, so if you need more help doing this I hope Thierry or somebody else will jump back in.)

The trace info may also help Thierry (or someone else) in making further suggestions - but we are getting to the "outer edges" of my knowledge here.

I am jumping ahead, but assuming we get through this problem, your Windows Firewall needs to be configured to allow BOINC. You do this by opening the "Windows Firewall" control panel and clicking on the "Exceptions" tab. Use the "Add program" option to select BOINC Manager and then check its box in the "Exceptions" list. When you turn the firewall back on, BOINC should be allowed to communicate (just make sure the "Do not allow exceptions box" is NOT checked).

Stick, I can only think of

Stick,

I can only think of one thing, and that's so far out in leftfield I hesitate to touch it.

But, here goes. Kinda loopy, but see if it flies.

1 - We cannot "see" Mobasoft's host; the webpage shows him as having no host. If he had a host attached, we'd be able to see at least that it was "hidden". His page says Computers - View and links to a page with no listing.

2 - Mobasoft is able to request Einstein work, reschedule, reset project, detach from project. Therefore he must have a host attached to Einstein.

3 - 1 & 2 are inconsistent, mutually contradictory.

Unless...

Suppose Mobasoft inadvertantly opened a new account, new username, without knowing it, and attached the computer to that account. Is that possible?

As I said, it's a reach.

Michael
