For you newbies, here are the rules:
1. To participate in the game, you must post to the prescribed thread.
2. A post must consist of at least one word.
3. A participant may not have two or more consecutive posts in the thread.
4. The winner of an episode is responsible for organizing the next episode and for choosing the winner of that episode.
5. The winner may be chosen on the basis of the date/time of the post, the number of the post in the thread (50th post; 31415th post; ...), the presence/absence of a particular word/phrase in the post, or any other reason selected by the organizer of the episode. However, the organizer of an episode is prohibited from winning that particular episode.
6. Have fun!

And having said all of this and with a flare of trumpets we are off (????)

Yesterday this popped up

Yesterday this popped up above the water surface.  The first bloom of a water lily in over a year.  I assume its lack of performance was due to excessively high water temps.  We have experienced cooler weather recently so I remain optimistic.

I thought I'd come over and

I thought I'd come over and see if anyone was here to chat as I'm doing my civic duty by texting voters. Well, I'm done texting; now I'm just waiting for replies.

I think the attention span of most people is too short these days and since voting is 2 weeks away alot of interest now doesn't mean alot of voters in 2 weeks.

A lot of places have early

A lot of places have early voting though. Plus, depending on their response we'll send another text closer to the date or the day of. Or take them off our list, of course.

current time 18:09 with outside temp of 78 (it has been a long time coming).  Air is off windows are open.  Life is good, at least until the 90s return which will probably be the end of the week.  But I will take what I have now.

Reminding voters to vote ?

Reminding voters to vote ? That sounds thankless.

Beautiful sunny and warm day, mild cool breeze, gentle drifting of some high cirrus clouds. Being a clear day, I can see forever ....

Look all around, there's nothing but blue skies

Look straight ahead, there's nothing but blue skies

Another hippie revolution would be nice. I kinda missed the first one. This could be me :

At present, see https://einsteinathome.org/content/pascal-again-available-turing-may-be-coming-soon  , i would not recommend a 2080 even to a fractionally dimensional Australian

BUT cheap is not the word I'd use for the 1080Ti's right now!! They are in the $750US range and up.

I actually got a "thank you

I actually got a "thank you for contacting me" today. As we get closer to the election we are getting more questions like "where's my polling place" and "where can I find a sample ballot".

That said, there are a lot of rude people out there. My favorite went on for quite some time telling me I was a devil worshipper. Since I'm an atheist she didn't quite hit her target.

In my experience a fair number of people don't have actual conversations. They wait for a gap in whatever the other person is saying and then say something they thought of. For them there is no requirement to correlate the semantics of the relevant vocal emissions. I think the urge to speak can be uncontrollable for some, like an addictive habit eg. gambling or drinking alcohol. I mean this in all in seriousness, some simply don't have the receptive apparatus or haven't practised listening enough to develop that skill. I reckon she was merely emitting her own internal dialog and you happened to be there at the time. Or maybe she was lonely and wanted to extend the interaction, using the devil thing as a hook. Not necessarily crazy .... just not socialised enough as a child to capably pick up the other side of a discussion ie. egocentric & not even realising that. In clinical interviews I usually keep quiet and wait for a decent silence before speaking, which can be up to ten minutes sometimes.

As for sample ballots : since we have more than two parties the chosen voting system is 'preferential'. You've gotta number all the boxes from 1 to however many candidates, no candidates skipped and no repeated numbers. Outside the polling booths each party/candidate have people who hand out 'how to vote cards' detailing that numbering which is desired by a given candidate. You can of course ignore this. There was a famous poll in Tasmania several decades ago - a referendum about hydro-dam construction. The only choices were amongst various places to build a dam, and not whether you'd like a dam anywhere at all. The majority simply wrote 'no dams' on the ballot which made it technically invalid but the government of the day got the hint anyway. The preferential system can be mildly hilarious in outcome, especially for our upper houses, as the technique frequently elects the 'least disliked' candidate whom is not actually popular ( or even known ) with any majority. Not too long ago there was a wood mill owner who was elected that way, much to everyone's surprise including his. Go figure .... :-))

Cheers, Mike.
