One day when I was there, just before sunset, a balloon came along, flying right over Barn 9, and landed in the flat area next to our parking lot. Don't they have to ask permission before landing on private property?
Do you mean a hot air balloon? If so then not if they said it was an 'emergency', any airplane, hot air ballon, etc can have an 'emergency' and land almost anywhere, yes even military airfields, IF it's an 'emergency'. BUT don't get caught faking it if you decide to land at a military airfield, you may not see the light of day again for a long time. I'm sure you remember the News about US airplanes, and other Countries too, military planes landing at the 'wrong' Countries airbases in 'emergencies'. Landing ANYWHERE is better than crashing somewhere. California had a rash of airplanes landing on freeways for a while, probably after some new stories about the Interstates really being 'take-off and landing strips in emergencies'. That's NOT true, but internet legends die hard. IF it were true there wouldn't be overpasses every 300 feet in alot of cases. Using the freeway as a runway out on the middle of nowhere makes no sense either, how would you get the infrastructure there to support the plane, and harrier type jets don't need runways.
Is it bad that SETI has 6 times as many WUs as my current queue of Einstein atm? (One of which is about to finish soon so it will be 9x in the near future...)

Howdy !
You can adjust the 'Resource Share' by going in to your account settings and clicking on Einstein@home preferences.
Adjust the resource share to a desired amount (say 1000 ) then go and
do the same a Seti. If you then adjust Seti to (say 500) then
theoretically Einstein would get more work (Highly recommended : )

The Resource shares are exactly the same. I'm just giggling inside that there were lots of WUs being tossed about for SETI on mine And I shall change asap. ;)

That is the theory anyway. I have a 10 to 1 preference for Seti over Einstein, but both are about the same total credits. I have a 60 to 1 preference set for Seti over Collatz, yet Collatz has a 4x lead in total credits. Now the real strange one is I have a 60 to 1 preference for Seti set over Seti Beta, but the credits for Beta are only behind 3 to 1.
What you are seeing with W/U's is the same issue with credits. They only mean something inside a single project. Otherwise credits and numbers of work units are useless measures. Don't worry about them.

Ah, the hot air balloons :
for which we have about ten mobs who will offer you a sunrise ride over the vineyards etc locally ( Yarra Valley ). I often see them on the way to work. By the time I pass them they are looking for somewhere to land. The driver is sober no doubt, but all others have had some bubbly. Sometimes they hover near a certain roundabout and make polite comments* apparently directed at the passing traffic some 100ft below, like : "here we go, here we go, here we go WOOO ... hiccup ..... here we go, here we go, here we go, WHAT !" That sort of thing.
They pretty much land where they please, more or less because being unpowered for lateral movement, a case could be made for a safe landing as best as offered by a given circumstance. Fair enough. The issue becomes one of good manners for good neighbours in the end. There is a particular spread that features male Angus beef cattle for stud purposes :
.... which would be upset if you landed amidst, but definitely not the run-away-scared type of upset.
Some of the vineyards host certain balloon companies and it becomes a matter of delicacy if they land in another competing vineyard, that also may host a competing balloon enterprise. But they are all grown-ups, right ? :-)
Cheers, Mike.

I think that is an urban myth... The RAF did test a Jaguar take off and landing when the M55 was being built see wiki and here youtube but this was to prove the Jaguar's capability to land on grass runways or roads, which at the time of the cold war, was expected practice for certain aircraft.
Motorways are built in the UK as elsewhere to motorway standards, not aviation ones.
I am under the possible delusion that Finland and/or Sweden have motorway usage as a deliberate operational tactic/case for military jet fighter use ? A pretty 'sporty' option if so.
Cheers, Mike.
( edit ) While I would hardly quote YouTube as a definitive reference, I have seen some quite excellent low level stuff performed by that canard wing fighter. There is even 'piano keys' painted on the road.
( edit ) The SAAB Viggen. An older, great design rather like the F-16 which is also an old & great design. I've seen and heard an F16 close up doing that take off to vertical ballistic flight, getting to 20,000 feet in a little over a minute ( timed from the start of runway roll ). The noise is like the air tearing apart ....

That's something else I've wondered about. If I simply post the video to Youtube and set it to "monetize," does that constitute commercial use? Commercial use involves more than just the flight regs.
I think the regs say that anything but recreational is commercial use. IIRC there have been photographers who have gotten in trouble for using the drone as a camera platform. Like taking photos of a house for sale or a happy couple at a wedding. So I'm sure monetize on youtube would be commercial use. So would the IRM having a link from their site to your youtube videos, because of your relationship with them.
Potential shoots at IRM aside for the moment, what I have done so far is strictly done for recreation. Then I put it on Youtube to share it with selected other people. This is still recreation. If I widen the audience and monetize it, does that change it after the fact into commercial use?
If I'm out just being recreational and happen to take a picture of something newsworthy and sell the shot to a magazine, does that constitute commercial use?
I think the FAA needs to clarify these questions.
