Hi everyone,

Since our servers are being flooded by bogus (if not malicious) requests we decided to ban the culprits, based on certain request rate thresholds. We can't share the actual values to not give those attackers a clue how to adjust their approach. However, since all rate limiting can also affect legitimate users, please report back if you find yourself running into connection issues when browsing our website or when requesting new tasks.

Please bear with us while we're trying to strike the balance between catching the culprits and not affecting any of our volunteers.

Thank you,
Oliver

Don't know when you

Don't know when you implemented your scheme to catch the culprits, but I have noticed slower connections to the website in over a week.  Most notable in how long it takes the forums to refresh since I spend a lot of time in the forums.

Hi Keith,You noticed the

Hi Keith,

You noticed the effect of what the bad guys were doing, not our counter-measures. We started to mitigate things on Friday but without affecting anyone of you guys. Response times should have been better since then. Today we started with more radical measures but already disabled those again, for the time being.

We'll keep you posted.

I don't know if these

I don't know if these measures or actions are the source of "an issue" I noticed, but in case, here goes. I have been a member for a long time with 300,000,000 + credits. It struck me that I had not seen any work units for a while, and started looking around for some reason. First issue, I was not able to log in, I had to reset my password, I am nit happy with that, I have a system for passwords, and you broke it by forcing me to change it. Having logged in, my home page looks weird, My stats has the correct total but then says -50  -40  -30  -20  -10. It says I have been a member since 18/05/2021 yet my computers list shows machines I stopped running a very long time ago, and messages going back to 2008. To the left of this box, it says 2005?

There is possibly a whole lot more weirdness but I can't be bothered to look for it right now.

Your profile says that you

Your profile says that you joined Feb 21 2005.

the “-50 -40 -30 -20 -10 Today” section is actually a graph of your recent contribution history for the last 50 days or so. The -50 means 50 days before today. Same with the others. In your case it’s blank because you have not contributed anything in that timeframe.

I had a longer look at my profile, the 18/05/2021 date is the date I joined my team, that is a bit odd as I've been a member of the team that I am basically responsible for more than a decade.

I know I have not  contributed recently, I don't know why though, it is still on my projects list.

your client is not asking for any work. that's why you aren't getting any.

for whatever reason, your client is not asking for work (the instance of BOINC installed on your computer). this can be due to many things, but a probable reason could be that the client thinks it has enough work from other projects already and doesnt need more from einstein. you should look into the configuration settings you have for einstein as well as other projects as well as the compute preferences for the BOINC client itself. do you have Einstein set to NNT? do you have Einstein project preferences here at the website configured appropriately for the type of work you want? do you have a bunch of work from other projects? do you have compute prefs set with a large enough cache? these are all types of things to investigate and sort out.

In addition to what Ian said,

In addition to what Ian said, you have only your CPU with it's graphics processing unit ( i.e. GPU ).  With only your CPU doing double-duty, you may have too many individual tasks running at one time.  Narrow it down... try one project's task, and see how it does.  If you're satisfied with it, then try two... and so on.

Just be aware that with only an 8 core processor, and you have 6 projects listed (I don't know whether or not any are using NNT in BOINC), that it can only process at the very most 7 tasks @ a task/CPU core - leaving a single core for running Windows, they are GPU or CPU tasks.

Your account shows as having joined on 21st Feb, 2005.  Currently, you have one active host that was originally created on 25th Oct, 2022, nearly 10 months ago.  In all that time it has contacted the project just 21 times.  It has 0 for total credit and 0.0 for RAC so it has never returned a successful task.  It shows as having no GPU.

Interestingly, in your older hosts, there is an almost identical machine, the only difference being the presence of an AMD HD 7850/7870 series GPU.  It was last active on 17th Oct, 2022, just 8 days before your current machine started up.  Perhaps the GPU failed and you restarted with a new ID?  If that's the case, maybe the previous incarnation was only allowed to do GPU tasks (CPU tasks disabled) and that would explain why you don't appear to have ever had any work for the replacement ID.  Have you really checked which searches are enabled for your currently active host?

If you still have the AMD GPU in working condition and if you ran it 24/7, it should be capable of around 300K RAC (a bit more if it was a 7870) with tasks from the gamma-ray pulsar (FGRPB1G) search.

Cheers,
Gary.
