On the evening of 1/5/06 I installed the Windows WMF vulnerability security patch from Microsoft on my computers. On my computers running Windows 2000 and Windows XP BOINC (2.45) continued working without problems but on my computer running Windows Server 2003 BOINC now locks up and appears to not do anything (0% CPU time in task manager). I tried updating BOINC to version 5.2.13 on that computer and it still behaves the same way (0% CPU time used). Anyone know if there is some kind of incompatibility with BOINC and Windows Server 2003 with the new security patch? Everything was working fine before I installed the patch.

BOINC & Win Server 2003 & WMF vulnerability security update?
)
I thought I'd add two things. The total "CPU Time" field in task manager sticks at 00:00:01 and never changes. If I try to select anything (buttons, menus, etc.) in BOINC Windows displays "(not responding)" in the title bar. So the program immediately locks up and doesn't respond. Is anyone else having this problem since installing the Windows patch that came out on 1/5? Any ideas how to proceed to fix this or find out what is wrong?

Have you tried removing the Windows WMF patch to see if BOINC will work again?

Also, is the driver for your graphics card up to date?
RE: RE: RE: I thought

My graphics card driver is up to date. I removed the patch. It still doesn't work. I remembered that I'd also installed Adobe Reader 7.0.5 at the same time, so I removed it as well. BOINC still hangs up. Any ideas about what else to check?
Since you also just upgraded
)
Since you also just upgraded to BOINC 5.2.13, have you checked to make sure your firewall isn't blocking BOINC from accessing the internet? Some firewalls need to be reauthorized after program upgrades. If that isn't it, please post the messages from under your BOINC Manager "Messages" tab (after doing a BOINC restart).
The only firewall on that
)
The only firewall on that computer is through a LinkSys broadband firewall/router. I've never needed to change firewall settings previously to enable any program but let me know if there is something I need to do.
There is no way for me to post the messages from the "Messages" tab. It locks up as the program is beginning. It gets to the point where it says "BOINC Manager - (localhost)" in the title bar and "Connecting to localhost" in status at the lower right of the window and it freezes. Previously that status in the lower right changed to "Connected to localhost" but that doesn't happen now. Clicking anywhere in the window makes the title bar change to "BOINC Manager - (localhost) (Not Responding)" and it sits there doing nothing. Any ideas?
RE: The only firewall on

I was thinking software firewall and from your expanded description of what is happening, it is obviously not a firewall problem. Have you tried removing BOINC (using Windows Add/Remove) and reinstalling it?
RE: I was thinking software
)
Yes. I even tried uninstalling v5.2.13 and reinstalling v4.45. It still froze up immediately after starting. A restore point was created before it did the installation of the Windows patch and Adobe Reader. Think it would help to try and go back to that restore point? I only ask because I haven't figured out how to do that yet.
RE: RE: I was thinking

Yes. I think that is worth a try. (And, it's not that hard to figure out.)
This may or may not be
)
This may or may not be related, but today I just installed Windows 2003 Enterprise Server(MS Promotional copy) on a Dual AMD MP2200. I then installed Service Pack 1. However, since installing SP1, I find that the only Boinc version that actually runs is 4.19. Every other version I've tried(4.45, 5.2.2, and 5.2.13) all fail with same lockups described by the OP. I've not installed any other MS patches yet.
Edit: I do have Acrobat Reader 7.0.0 installed and all is working fine.
