I see stuck tasks maybe a couple of times per week on occasions (particularly during summer) but I do have a large number of machines, many of which are overclocked. The three factors I've noticed which seem to increase the risk of this problem are the age of the machine, the level of overclocking and the ambient temperature of the environment. I put it down to heat stress in marginal hardware.
Stopping and restarting BOINC works to free up the task in about 99% of cases. I can't actually think of a case where it didn't work. Also, the work seems to continue to completion and is validated OK in all the cases I've followed. Reducing the level of overclocking and/or keeping the machine cooler seems to prevent the problem from recurring. I have seen many examples where heat has been a major contributor. The problem seems to occur particularly during a heatwave when the aircon isn't coping or is non-existent.

I don't know what's wrong. Perhaps BOINC says something in the messages or the status of the task.
But otherwise, exit BOINC (BOINC Manager->File->Exit) and restart it (Start->Programs->BOINC->BOINC Manager). That may at times get it going again.
