Work in progress crashes after screensaver ends

I just started using BOINC two days ago.

The program works just fine for several hours at a time and has even completed one workset. However, invariably I find that if I leave the computer unattended for several hours so that the screensaver comes on and subsequently the monitor goes into powersaver mode, BOINC's work crashes the second I move the mouse to turn bring the monitor active again. I've done this twice now and the message is "Unrecoverable error for result XXXXXX (Device does not recognize command)". The timestamp for the error is the exact second when I move the mouse to reactivate the monitor from hibernation.

Has anyone run into this?
Thanks.

Tony,

There is a well known graphics bug that occurs when the screensaver is used with the official Einstein app (v4.79) and BOINC 4.45 (or later). Your first "Client error" message {exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005)} is indicative of that bug. However, I don't think your other error messages are. You can fix the graphics bug by downloading the Beta application (see link under More Information on the EAH home page); or alternatively, you can quit using the screensaver. (I use and recommend the Beta app.) It's possible that the graphics bugs is the cause of your whole problem; but, it's also possible that it is only part of the problem.

Edit: I would also suggest you do "Do a keyword search of messages." on "graphics bug" and read a little more about it. You should find a lot of messages to read (and a lot of repetition).

Now, now, Stick, you know that if everyone did the sensible thing and first searched the messageboards for answers to graphics bug problems, we (especially you) would be like the Maytag repairman. We'd be fighting to be the first to pounce on the one or two help needed messages/day that it would be reduced to. :-)

edit - let's not suggest anything rash.

If this is your first volley in our "son of Beta 0.18 debate" I'm deeply disappointed. Maytag repairmen ??? I would hope so. Might give me to time to read the BOINC Wiki (as Ageless suggested today) and I could learn how to fix another problem. ;-)

No. Let's suggest something sensible - like fixing the bugs in v4.79.

Stick,

Sorry to disappoint your disappointment, amigo. lol. We can agree to the venue (I think the original site may still be good, but we could start a thread in Cruncher's Corner instead - wouldn't want to disrupt things on Probs & Bugs), but I wouldn't start Round 2 of the Shootout at the OK Corral without a proper invitation and arrangements made for publishing/television rights.

Gotta believe they're still working feverishly on the fix, else it would be out-of-beta. Just be real nice to catch a progress report or word of what direction it's going every month or so, at least.

Never knew you were such a "glass is half full" kinda guy. :-) On this issue, mine is becoming "half empty".

Amen brother!

By now, I am afraid we have totally confused Tony (not to mention hijacking his thread). So, let me speak for both of us and say:

Tony, we apologize. But as you have probably surmised by now, the problem you have just now encountered, has been around for a while. And, Michael and I have just been letting off a little steam. By now, we know how to explain the "workaround" in our sleep. Please excuse our digression. And please let us know if the Beta app (or not using the screensaver) works for you.

Michael,

Don't know if it was your intent to do so there but I saw your "Wish List" post and I have "picked up the gaunlet" so to speak.

Thanks for the

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, two seconds after I hit "Post reply" I noticed the other threads. Unfortunately, it's not always easy to even explain the problem; so finding the right keywords to search with can be difficult. I had searched the FAQ, but couldn't find the topic. Perhaps there should be (or maybe is) a "known issues" page with the most freqeuntly encountered bugs/problems?

-Tony

p.s. Switching the screensaver to "none" seems to have resolved the issue. Thanks again.

Tony,

Good idea! I suggest you post it on Message boards : Wish List.

While you are there you might also want to read Defaults for installation and PLEASE, make 0.18 for some recent postings on the graphics bug.

Finally, try browsing through Message boards : Cafe Einstein : NEW: WINDOWS TEST APPLICATION FOR EINSTEIN@HOME for discussion on the Beta app.

Glad to hear you have your problem under control!
