Actually, I prefer a new install as well for the same reason. Come to think of it, is there a way to upgrade and still have the benefits of a new install? I'm thinking format, install old version, then upgrade as mentioned earlier by Paul. Now I just have to get the instructions for a format off the net. Would this work?
I think that would be an acceptable alternative. That gets rid of most of the bloat that has been attached with multiple program loads and unloads and cleans out much of the remaining garbage. -- Of course, back up, back up, back up before doing the format, but that would be a perfect alternative at a lower cost.
And, again, make sure that you have drivers that will work with any of the older equipment. Might want to do a bios update at the same time??

Haven't seen any improvements in the BOINC operations, but it did unload a bunch of old, dead programs (with my approval), mostly games that I had not played yet. I have been running Ubuntu since version 5.10, was running Mandrake before that. I have one running Linux and 4 running Windows. I have less problems with the Linux box.

I've just done an upgrade of Mandriva from 2009.0 -> 2010. It went far too smooth and easy. It just simply did it and it worked, including for some rather obscure customisations that I've done. The boot up and desktop session startup are nicely faster. There's various additional eye-candy also if you like that sort of thing. Rather good. Well worth looking at: Mandriva 2010

Trouble is, I copied the boinc directory into the right folder (C: program files) and then installed BOINC on top of it. Why didn't my magration happen corectly? Also, can't get projects working: empty task pane (probably CPID related).

I can reconnect to get those stats and line that one up without a problem.

You need to copy the Data directory. You copy it from wherever it is to the default location for Vista/7 which is C:\ProgramData\Boinc. After that you can install boinc. Or you can do it the way I did:
1. Install boinc (with network disabled) - don't start it.
2. Copy data directory from backup
3. Reinstall boinc with the repair option (to set permission on files/folders)
4. Start it up, with fingers, arms and legs all crossed

Did you read the BOINCStat FAQs? Especially the second list item in FAQ #14:Run at least one system with all projects, or one system with project A and B, and one system with project B and C. If there is a project that runs isolated from the other projects, its CPID will never line up.

I wouldn't expect the WU processing time to change. There should be minimal overhead from any good OS in any case.

That directory is initially hidden by windows! The exact path is given in the messages after a restart of the BOINC client.
