For a laugh I Wiki'ed this chap whom my parents told me ( when I was a child ) that I was vaguely descended from. Could be nonsense of course - don't let the truth get in the way of a good story - but DownUnda there is a certain cachet in having ratbags as ancestors ( which really isn't all that hard to achieve for many of us ). This guy seems to have been a Puritan thug. :-)

So does anyone wish to reveal their ( alleged ) ancestry?

Cheers, Mike.

Who Do You Think You Are?

I used to tell myself and other people that I was a herring in a previous life! Herrings are rather delightful fish, both to look at and eat, see here:

You'll be pleased to know I don't think that way now.

I am a direct descendent of this fellow:

As Mike would know, there is a certain cachet in Australia to being descended from an English convict transported here in the 19th Century for his sins.

Although sentenced to death, the sentence was commuted and he was sent (via Norfolk Island) to Van Diemen's Land - now known as Tasmania. Sounds like a good reason to abolish the death penalty, though I have an obvious interest in that. :)

He became a successful businessman at Launceston and a respectable citizen, or at least as respectable as was possible when you were a mulatto reformed highwayman. When I retire I am going to have a very close look at the records relating to his time in Tasmania.

My ancestors were barkeepers.

My ancestors were barkeepers. They had taverns. You can also see it in my last name which is "Detavernier"
Over here you see a lot of people with last names referring to the life and jobs of their ancestors.

My ancestors have kicking

My ancestors have kicking around these parts since the 17th century (Acadian French). Just common folk.. farmers and fisherman on the Ile de St.-Jean.

We avoided the Acadian Expulsion

One of my ancestors invented

One of my ancestors invented armed Submarines for the first time, for the US navy way back in the 1800's. His name was John Holland I think.

John Holland's accomplishment and contributions were great, but you'd need to qualify the statement a little.

Something like, "first useful armed submarines", or "built vessels starting the direct chain of development that soon resulted in the highly useful submarines of WWI".

But there were previous attempts, including David Bushnell's Turtle of 1775, and several Confederate attempts in the American Civil War, of which Hunley actually sank a Union ship, though only after having killed three successive crews in its own difficulties.

But until Holland, while there were many designs, some construction, and a few uses in battle, the way forward to something useful was not clear at all.
