Wikipedia says Feb 19 2005 but first post I could find suggests Nov 10 2004. That's message number 77. Anyone find an earlier one?
Fun (or depressing) to see that the same question is still being asked on a regular basis.
Guess official launch was 2005 and beta started in 2004.

I snuck in 4 jan 2005 when the otherwise disabled registration was left open for about a day, the project was still in beta at the time.

Correct. Beta phase (invitation only) started in October 2004, official launch was on 19 February 2005.
(I guess the first dozen news items on E@H didn't make the conversion from text file to news forum).

Well, the first few hundred participants got somewhat hand-picked invitations. Later, I think from December or January on we occasionally (maybe once a week) enabled the (that time) normal sign-on for a few hours or days until we got the number of participants and hosts that we thought our infrastructure could handle, then disabled it again. From the official launch on we just let anyone register whoever wanted to join whenever he wanted.
