In any event, this has nothing to do with EAH.

It has a lot to do with EAH and with every other BOINC project too because every minute spent crunching an LHC task that has already met quorum is a minute that could be spent crunching an EAH task that DOES need crunching.

P.S. Anyway, thanks Alinator for taking the time to think about it and your post in defense of the truth.

Agreed, but I have control over whether I will let my equipment waste its time at the expense of my other projects. ;-)

I was thinking more on the lines that even EAH (or any other project for that matter) has very limited influence on what LHC sets for their policies. So debating the relative merits of those policies here is of limited value.

Fair enough. I am not asking EAH admins/moderators to get involved in the debate and I do realise the limits of EAH's influence. I am not looking for a referee/adjudicator/judge, just an open debate in a neutral forum on neutral turf, for whatever value comes to be.

Regarding Don's blocked IP address, I know for a fact they're not blocking mine and I doubt the LHC@home admins know how to. Or perhaps they just can't be bothered since there are numerous ways around that tactic anyway. I too suspect Don is either the victim of fubared routing somewhere along the line or else a peering spat between carriers.

Yep, that is one of the real beauties of the EAH community. Keep it civil and just about anything is fair game for discussion around here. :-D

Unfortunately some do not know how to keep it civil elsewhere. They seem to have a split personality, one that plays nice on other forums, but engages in behavior nearly identical to the people who opened multiple accounts after being banned at Predictor.

It's probably worth for me to quickly mention that, thus far, I haven't seen anything in this thread which I could/should moderate upon according to policy that we apply here. [ I've had a couple of PM's about this thread you see ]. Just as long as you keep the language 'nice' - kid friendly is the best test - then I think it's OK to openly discuss this sort of thing here. After all, we've had content with much worse criticism of E@H here before, which has been allowed by us!! :-)

So please continue to keep the tone appropriate, and I won't need to tap anyone on the shoulder ... :-) :-)

Cheers, Mike.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

Have you really sat down and read through the saga? As I said, a certain individual does not know how to behave elsewhere...and in fact, if they were entering a real physical establishment after being banned multiple times by creating a "fake identity", I'd have them taken to jail... Their message has lost any meaning to me that it might've had due to their continued harassment of participants on those forums and their thumbing their virtual nose at the administration by intentionally coming back after they were banned.

Be careful you're not allowing yourself, no, not just yourself, ALL of us, to get set up...

Brian, you seem confused about which one of us is the moderator!! :-)

Thanks all the same, but do please leave it alone - and you well know what happens when you can't restrain yourself. If you don't like moderation policy, mine or anyone else's, then complain as you have done in the past via project management. In the mean time .... take the hint and move on.

Cheers, Mike.

Brian ( responding publicly

Brian ( responding publicly to your PM ). You misunderstand :

- it is not your role to be moderating

- feel free to complain to project management. I cannot be bluffed in anticipation of that.

- and you've not taken the hint.

Mike.

My only problem with LHC is

My only problem with LHC is that they rarely have work and when there is some it takes a very short time compared to SETI's astropulse, QMC's ORCA (where IR is 3 and quorum is 1) not to mention CPDN and CPDN Beta with their year-long deadlines. So any discussion about LHC is purely academic.

However, there is little point to arguing the case there, since even if the people who are running the BOINC side of the project agree with you in principle, the ones who have the final say aren't listening. Thus the odds are low anything will be changed.

If nearly everybody detached their hosts in protest of the waste, they would be forced to either:

1) eliminate the waste and woo contributors back, or
2) mothball the collider

They would do neither ... the project LHC@Home is nice but not essential to the operation of the LHC.

And so, even if a substantial number of people left the project to the point where it affected the work throughput the most likely option would simply be to stop the project entirely.

Which is moot as even if I were the only one there I am sure that I would not mind having the work even if others left... :)
