I guess I don't see what you mean by having to update manually on 4.72. I am currently running 4.72 on all 4 of my machines. They all upload the results when they are done, and then report them at a later time.
Yeah, I've always had the two step update happening, and I've always just accepted it and let it do it's thing... the only time I would be worried is if a project is being temperamental and a WU was almost due. But with my settings, that's never really a problem, so I am the ultimate set it and forget it girl.
Except that I recently changed my settings to finish off my CP unit so I can be rid of that frustrating project... But once it's gone it's once again back to my 50 predictor/50 everything else share...
After both. You have to "report" it to get it into the database. THen it is validated, if valid and enough others are valid, then the quorum is formed. Unless I forgot a step ...
Is the quorum decided when the WU is completed and validated or when it is "reported"?
The size of the quorum is decided upon by the project. Actually accepting a consensus of the quorum requires the validator to act. So, upload the science results, report to the scheduler which enters a mark in the database. If this is the one that will trigger the quorum the transitioner is triggered. The transitioner then informes the validator to do its work, and if the validator succeeds, credit is granted, but if the validator fails the results (they don't match) the WU is issued to someone else to attempt to make a consensus later. If there are too many errors, the WU errors out completely and nobody gets credit.
The LHC result reported sometime during the night, but I didn't get the time that it happened. I unplugged my laptop to move it into the front room and the battery died before I had a chance to plug it back in. Could it be becuase the battery is 5 years old? LOL

Still waiting on the LHC to report, but that could be a while. My current LHC WU still has an estimated 6 hours crunch time.

Did you check the log file? See if the message is in stdoutdae.txt. That file is appended to, so old messages aren't lost each time BOINC starts.

What is the "usual" (no manual intervention) time lapse between the completed WU being initially submitted and the time it is "reported"?
I think the answer is, "it depends". Usually it reports results the next time it communicates with the server I think.

It depends. It will be reported on the next contact to get work, when the time is later than 24 hours before the due date, when the user hits update, or if the version is recent enough (I am not certain this is in 4.45) when queue length of time has passed since the WU is completed.

I want the "report" to go soonest, but want to know how long it will be if I do not "update".
