Right now I'm waiting for a new SSD to be delivered and then I'm planning on upgrading to Win 10, with the info provided by Scalextrix I'm confident things will work fine for me in regards to Boinc.

BE CAREFUL, there are reports of Win10 not liking SSD's some times, hopefully the new updates MS has sent out fix that problem.

Well we will see how it goes tonight, so far I've installed a brand new SSD and have Win 7 up and running. After all updates and drivers are installed I will tackle the upgrade to Win 10. If things go south I still have my old SSD with the old Win 7 installation to fall back on, so should be safe.

I'll report back once I get Boinc and Einstein up and running.

I have been a Windows insider

I have been a Windows insider running windows 10 with BOINC/Einstein for several months on 3 desktops each with SSD's. I have not experienced any problems so far.

If it is a question about drivers, you may try a clean windows 10 install after the upgrade by resetting the system which will bring in new drivers. you won't lose your activation as that will always work after the upgrade

Success! I'm now running

Success!

I'm now running Win 10 and Boinc picked up right where it left of. I have the data directory on a separate hdd so I just pointed Boinc to the right place during the installation and all seems well.

As to the whole procedure it took a bit longer than expected but that was mostly because of all the updates to install on Win 7 before upgrading to Win 10. I did notice that the TrusedInstaller process kept gobbeling up RAM as if there was now tomorrow, it top out using about 13 GB of RAM before all 163 updates of that round was installed! Got 16 GB in the machine so no real problem but task manager showed 95% of the physical memory used, never seen that before on this box.

I then downloaded the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft and when I ran it I got to choose between upgrading this computer or create a installation media to use on another device. I opted to upgrade this computer and it proceeded to download the necessary files. Once done I confirmed that I was ready and the upgrade went ahead. Took less time than I expected and nothing strange happened.

After that was done I downloaded and installed the newest drivers from both Nvidia (355.60) and Intel (10.18.10.4252) before installing Boinc.

Starting to get late here so off to bed, here's hoping I don't start throwing Invalids or Validate errors while I get some rest.

I am VERY glad to hear it went well, I am planning on doing my laptop in the not to distant future along with putting an SSD in it at the same time.

I did a similar process, on a regular Sata HD on my desktop, except stopped after installing SP1 for Win7, I ran the MediaCreation tool and went straight to Win10 with no problems. I don't know if Win10 really needs all those Win7 updates or if it is just supposed to make the process faster, as fewer upgrades need to be installed during the Win10 install. Mine took a total of about an hour for the Win10 upgrade, maybe a little less, I only had 8gb of ram in the machine at the time, it now has 16gb though.

So, coming up to 24h after

So, coming up to 24h after the upgrade and things do look pretty good. I see one validate error on the HD4000 iGPU but everything else looks OK. Think I'll write that off as a random glitch or maybe user error in running Boinc while installing various drivers and such... =)

As for the system as a whole I had one major glitch when things became almost unresponsive and then when trying to log off/reboot I lost my patience and did a hard reset. Don't know what happened but it seems to have recovered. Also experienced some strange network related slowness, can't explain it but seem like something interfered with my network connection making it very slow and unreliable for a while. A few reboots later installing stuff and things seem to have gotten back to what I expect, weird. It's still early days and I didn't expect a totally smooth ride, so all in all I'm pretty happy. Just have to tackle the loooong list of things I want to install again as I opted to do a clean install or at least as clean as possible.

I have upgraded 3 of my hosts

I have upgraded 3 of my hosts so far (and messed around with sending one back to Win7 just for a test)

They seem to do different things depending on the version of the host.

I did my laptop first and it uses a SSD too and the only thing that happened was I had to update to get back on the wireless connection but other than that everything works fine and it still runs 24/7 (over 3 years now)

When I did my desktop that is a 3-core phenom with HDD and the 560Ti the only thing I had to do was d/l the GeForce driver again and still haven't updated that one to the new Win10 version that GeForce has but I did do that update on the laptop just because they suggest it and I like to test things like this.

And as Mikey knows Win10 is not really new if you are one of the *Insiders that started testing it over 6 months ago.

My 3rd upgrade was having HDD problems BUT it also let me test the different Windows 10 *repairs* that it does at boot up.

On that one I messed around with my Win7 disk in a partition along with 10

But I ended up just using another HDD and my Win7 Magical Disk (ah yes reminds me of the 2001 version of XP Pro )

I have my 8.1 ready for the upgrade since I did that first d/l already......just waiting a bit longer for a rainy day but it does pop up the box reminding me when I go check my Boinc Manager

One thing that came out yesterday was about the registration keys, it seems they are kept at MS, NOT on our pc's, this means that after an upgrade if you need to reinstall Win10 you could wipe the drive and install a brand new version of Win10 straight from the download links that have been floating around thru the media creation tool site. So if you burnt a dvd, or made a usb disk, of Win10 you can now use it without it requiring a key, after you have previously upgraded that same pc.

I JUST tried this on a blank HD and it did NOT work, it would not format or install Win10 on the drive, it said the drive was 'blank' and needed drivers. It was a standard 100gb sata drive so no drivers should have been needed.

Thanks, Holmis! So far you

Thanks, Holmis! So far you have 72 valid WUs and 1 invalid. It's safe to say the current driver works :)

Your welcome! =) At least

Your welcome! =)

At least we know it works on a HD4000 iGPU, it would be nice to hear from someone with a HD4600 or newer Inter iGPU because they were the ones experiencing trouble with newer drivers under Win7 and 8/8.1.
