I got two computers at home, a laptop (not very powerful) and a desktop (very powerful). The laptop is conected to the internet, the desktop is not. I often connect the laptop to the desktop however the desktop and internet are in different rooms . Is there a way I can download work onto my laptop, connect to my desktop and the desktop will do the work?
thanks

The only BOINC project I know about where this is possible and officially allowed would be ClimatePrediction.
There's no export function but you can just move a complete BOINC installation.

This question is asked occasionally and there are some threads about it in the forums. Some useful answers you may find in this one.
The easiest way in your case might be to export the BOINC directory on you Laptop to the Desktop and let the boinc client (and thus the App) run on the Desktop in the directory mounted from the Laptop. Of course when you have the client running on your Desktop, make sure it doesn't run on the Laptop in the same directory at the same time.

I am guessing that you use a modem to connect to the Internet. In xp there are an option that allows computers to chare a single Internet connection. So you could let your desktop connect to the Internet thru your laptop. You already know how to connect the laptop to the Internet and how to connect the laptop to the desktop. The problem is how you can do both at the same time. If you use a modem you can bye an extension cord so you can get a telephone line in your room. How do you connect the laptop to the desktop? Can you extend that connection so they can be connected while the laptop is in the other room?
Then you're really interested in a subject, there is no way to avoid it. You have to read the Manual.

I don't know where you are located or what kind of internet connection you have, but I was in the same situation a while back - one computer right next to the DSL modem, another (that could not be moved, and in a place where no wiring COULD be run to it) on the other end of the house. I found a wireless router and a wireless network card for around $200. Not only did this let both computers have constant internet connection, it did away with my need to burn a CD on one just to transfer something to the other (or in your case, cable the laptop to the desktop) as I could share files between them over the network.
The only reason _not_ to have a machine connected to the internet, besides cost, is security - but in this case, since you sometimes connect the two machines, any virus/etc. that gets to the laptop will then get to the desktop...
