I am interested in using my AMD(939)64bit to its full potential. Would it be effective to use windows 64 or should i opt for a linux based OS i have been using mandriva or mandrake 10 would this os be an option for me...if there is a team leader out there with some ideas or options for me let me know...thx

Win64 from the reports I've seen actually runs SLOWER. (I have an AMD 3700+ 939, WinXP.) None of the projects provide a 64-bit app, so I doubt if a 64-bit Linux OS would make any positive difference right now. CPDN _may_ release a 64-bit app at some point; if you do CPDN, then when they do, that would be the time to consider this.

Since the FPU on the 64 bit processors has not been updated much, you will receive only minor speed over a 32 bit processor at the same speed. Yes the application could be written for 64 bit and give you some speed there, but it's not going to make the difference people think it will. It's been tested with several optimized applications on SETI and others.
Until they decide that the FPU needs more umpf, we are kind of stuck with what we have.

I know this might seem cruel to those of you with 64bit processors, but looking around I don't see much rush by Intel or the software houses to go 64 bit processing. And as about 70% of the market uses Intel and in business thats probably closer to 90%, I'm not sure that the BOINC projects themselves are going to put much effort into going that way either.
I'm just a little bit afraid you have been conned by the marketing people again, even the games amrket are saying that porting there latest offerings to 64bit will see less than a 30% increase in performance and/or apperance.

I run Win64 on one Dell Dual Xeon, and regular on the other. No significant difference in performance. The only reason that the 32-bit machine does less work than the 64-bit is purely because I use the 32-bit machine for other things and the 64-bit Xeon just does BOINC.
You won't gain any speed

You won't gain any speed using XP64 bit to crunch with. But you will gain a huge amount in stability. I run XP64 bit on 3 of my farm computers and it is rock solid. And it seems to boot faster and load apps faster. The only problem is drivers. If you can find drivers for your printer and scanner you will like XP64. Go to www.planetamd64.com for XP 64 information and drivers.
Linux is a bit (sometimes a lot) slower on the distributed projects if you don't use the "enhanced apps"

Windows XP Professional x64 shows up on host lists as "Microsoft Windows 2003
Professional Edition," which is kind of weird because the 2003 name is usually used for server operating systems.

Collecting that information from that source will be skewed. It is a reasonable breakdown for home made computers and that source will likely get 90% of their data from people that build there own computers. Overall it was 83% intel, 13% AMD, and 4% other the last time I saw reliable numbers. AMD has likely gained some from intel since then so 80% intel, 16% AMD is probably close to current reality. In a business enviroment intel probably still has over 95% of the market even though the opterons have made a good deal of progress.
