Recently I found that BOINC has falsely assigned two different identities for one of my computers.( This happened while upgrading the OS from WIN 98 to XP) But while trying to merge the newly created host I found that the name of the original host is not shown on the list of the computers with which it is to be merged. Please suggest ways out of this problem.

Once all tasks associated with the old host have been removed from the database you will be able to delete it.

It's not surprising that this happened because the computer ID depends on both the hardware, which presumably didn't change, and the OS, which changed drastically. When BOINC was restarted, it would have suffered something like a traumatic mid-life identity crisis :). You can't really blame BOINC for getting a bit upset :).
I notice you have other Win98 machines in your list. If you are going to upgrade any more, the better approach would be to uninstall BOINC first which would remove all the executables but leave all the data and configuration information alone in the BOINC folder. Then after your OS upgrade, you could simply reinstall BOINC in that same folder and it should start up fine by updating the existing computer ID and not creating a new one.
Your problem now is that the website merge system sees your two IDs as not appropriate for merging since the OSs are totally different. You might be able to fool the merge system by editing configuration information but I've never tried it and certainly wouldn't recommend it as you could easily do more damage. I think you will have to accept that the previous information is lost and move on, unless someone else knows more about it.
Cheers,
Gary.
