for the last 3 days or so I've been unable to download work units
I just get the messages

BOINC decided that, based on the CPU time spent until now and your resource share of Einstein@Home, other projects (e.g.) SETI should get some more time before iit's Einstei's turn again. This is normal Eventually BOINC will download Einstein WUs again.
Having said that, just to make sure, you might want to check you didn't suspend Einstein by accident. (see the status in the right column of the PROJECTS tab view in BOINC manager. You might have to scroll horizontally to see that column.
