Topic 190817

I have E@H running successfully on one machine and have just installed it on another machine.
I am using both machines on my own account.
It communicates and downloads work with no problems.
However, when the screensaver starts up the E@H graphics (rotating star globe erc...) are only displayed for a fraction of a second before being replaced by the "BIONC is suspended" message that floats around the screen.
Thus the machine does no work and gains me no further credit and does not contribute to the project.

Can anyone help me with a solution to this dilemma ?

This particular computer along with several others is sitting there doing almost nothing for most of the day so one can understand why I wish to make better use of the wasted cycles.

Regards
Dave The Drummer.

Data : P4, 512Mb, 200gig HDD, 100MbLAN, XPpro, Intel82915G/GV/810GLexpress graphics.

At least a workaround would be to set your screen saver to "blank screen" instead.

Yes, but on some graphic cards it causes the processing to slow down, or stop completely.

You can always have a look at the graphics if you want.

In BOINC go to "work", select a WU and press "show graphics".

I am aware of that but would this not defeat the object of having the thing running in the first place ?
If one is using the PC to view the graphics then resources are not available to do useful work as the user is active hence no calculation and no point in seeing the graphics.

I would like E@H to run normally and without any issues in the same way as the other PC is currently running.
I installed and set up the program on the PC in exactly the same manner as the one that does work and yet there is a major difference in operation.

I have noticed that in the event log it says that the calculation is being paused because the user is active even though the computer is not being used for long periods. It is connected to a large network however.

Would the PC communicating regularly with my server of it's own accord be regarded as 'user activity' and therefore interrupt the operation of E@H ?

You see, part of my reason for wanting to use E@H is that it does have an excellent display when operating correctly. It causes many comments and much interest from people who would otherwise never have thought such a system of contribution to a worthwhile cause was possible. Hence they become users and the project becomes ever larger and the human race as a whole grows closer to the goal of getting the hell off this miserable little ball of rock.

I intend to run E@H on my corporate network with many hundreds of PCs providing these issues can be resolved and there are no security objections from my staff.

dave, Two questions - 1)

dave,

Two questions -
1) Does the newly-added box use integrated graphics, rather than a dedicated graphics card? Integrated graphics uses system RAM to display, and it may be possible that it drops available RAM below the level necessary for computation.
2) Are the graphics drivers up-to-date? Here is a thread detailing all you need to update the drivers.

Since this miserable little ball was likely a veritable garden before our ascendence to power, and since we have so far found nothing but miserable little balls of rock in our searches "out there", and we have irreparably (or darn near to it) screwed it up, one would have thought that the Earth itself would by now have yielded up some means of exiling us away to that misery which we have so richly earned.

The new box, and 99% of the other PCs I wish it to run on, have integrated graphics cards.
I saw that thread and as soon as I recover from this appalling flu-like bug that has laid me low this afternoon I will upgrade the lot of them.
There should be plenty of RAM in the machines though. I actually put the basic spec at the bottom of my first post, but to reiterate : P4, 512Mb, 200gig HDD, 100MbLAN, XPpro, Intel82915G/GV/810GLexpress graphics.

I'll sort the drivers out as soon as my head stops exploding and I can go out in public without holding a handkerchief to my streaming nose.

Thanks for your and the other Michael's help so far.

Dave.

dave, Sorry, I'd not

dave,

Sorry, I'd not noticed your spec info. That surely rules out RAM as a factor.

Depending on how the network is set up, it could. You could always try changing the "work only when idle" to "work always" to acertain if it is the network. I run mine continously unless Boinc slow down what i'm working on. (never :))

As far as security is concerned in a large corporate network, I would hope the level of competence in your IT dept would preclude any problems.
