4/08/2008 5:47:46 PM A new version of BOINC (6.2.14) is available for your computer
4/08/2008 5:47:46 PM Visit http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php to get it.
so I'll go and do that then. :-)
Cheers, Mike.
I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

I like the new, clean layout. Don't like the tiny font size, most unkind to those of us with less than good eyesight.
Looking good so far, but my own experience tells me that there are a few horror stories behind the scenes.

I tried to do this update yesterday. It stopt during installation and told me: He couldn´t clear the old version, Error 1714.4. But when I looked into the folder, the boincmgr.exe was missed. So it didn´t work any more. After reinstalling the former version 5.0.45 with the repair facility all things are working well. Probably it´s some problem with my oldish OS W2K SP4. Probably do you have some usefull hints in this regard? I don´t like to do a complete new installation.
I don't think we have really had a partial recovery yet since the messages you have quoted have been happening basically all weekend with the occasional successful reporting of work and even the very occasional download of a resend task. I haven't really been following things closely for the last 24 hours but at the moment I can't even report completed work so I can shut down those machines whose caches have fully completed. I would therefore say that we have less ability now to establish deep and meaningful contact with the servers than we did over the weekend.
It would be nice if someone (like Bernd) would give us a quick progress report since it's now 10:30AM UTC and he's probably been brought up to date with how things are going by now. It would be really nice to have an indication of the possible startup time so I can get an idea of when I'll be able to clear the caches and shut down those machines I'm planning to shut down. If it's possible that it might be soonish, I'll hang around and have a late night but if it's going to be a while yet I'll go to bed and check back tomorrow.

Did you try uninstalling the old version first? Maybe installing "over the top" isn't properly supported for the 5.x.x -> 6.x.x transition. I don't know as I've not tried any 6.x.x installations yet.

Installing "over the top" works fine on my Windows XP machine. It probably has more to do with him running Windows 2000 than anything.

Yeah, I'm not crazy about the small font either. But, you can fix that easily enough by increasing the font size for your browser. (It's under the "View" menu for Firefox. I'm not sure where it would be for Internet Explorer.)

The only problem with that is it changes the font size everywhere else you go as well.
Probably better to bump the size here for the new font where needed.
