Reinstalled system from back-up -- lost my latest work unit

A few days ago I migrated my Windows XP system to a larger disk. Things were fine and BOINC kept on doing work.

I still had another Windows (Win2000) operating system (which I only keep as a back-up in case of emergency) that I wanted to migrate to another partition in the larger disk. Well, I tried to reinstall it, only to later realize it did not support my size disk, and it ruined the partitions.

I had to reformat and reinstall my WinXP from a back-up a few days old -- this worked fine, except that I no longer have the latest work unit sent by the scheduler. Boinc has of course the unit it was working on when I did my original migration.

So, is there a way to tell the scheduler to send me a new unit, discard the one I have (which is already completed and reported), and that the one it sent last won't complete?

Gildardo,

Is it doing any work at the moment? It is commonly misunderstood about Einstein downloading work Unit by Unit - it does not. Einstein downloads a large datafile to your harddrive, from which it "slices off" workunits as needed. Your Athlon 1800, host 570072, has been working on units sliced from the "r1_1488.5" datafile. If that file is still in your einstein.phys.uwm.edu folder, then it should take up nearly where it left off, possibly discarding a corrupt workunit.

Is that the "master file", as mentioned in the 'messages' pane, eg. 'fetching master file' and 'Master file download succeeded' etc... Michael?

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

Just open up Boinc Manager, Work tab, find the E@H unit and hit the abort button.
That will effectively kill the unit, report it and download a the next data file.

Mike, the master file is "the URL that allows the BOINC Client Software to locate the Project's Scheduling Server and the Project's Data Servers. With this URL, the BOINC Client Software reads the Web Page at this URL and locates the "hidden" addresses of the other servers". More on that here.

My BOINC client is version 4.19 -- I can't seem to find the abort button.

The exact unit the client says it's working on is r1_1488.5_2545_S4R2a_1 , but as I said, at the E@H website this one is reported as being done (two days ago) and pending credit in my account's results.

The last unit "sent" last night is r1_1488.5__2491_S4R2a_0 , but **after** the unit was received and started work on it, I later had to *reformat* the new disk and reinstall everything from a three day old backup, so I obliterated anything that was done in the interim three days.

So, as far as my client is concerned, it doesn't know there was work done afterward. BOINC now shows all the stats of the unit it was working at the time I migrated to the new disk, including the name of the unit and the percentage done (about 30%, the unit received last night was only up to about 6.5%) I don't want to repeat work done already, but if there is no choice I'll do it.

I also finished off another two more units that my client is unaware of, and I don't want to repeat those either, though I believe this is a matter of the scheduler knowing, so I'm not as worried.

Mike H.,

No, that's different. If you look through my results, you'll see that my rig's been working mostly from the "r1_1077.0" datafile, and a little from the "r1_1035.5" datafile, slicing off incrementally lower-numbered WUs from them. These datafiles reside in the BOINC/projects/einstein.phys.uwm.edu folder, and are ~7.02Mb size. When BOINC requests more work, the scheduler tells it "where" to make the next slice, or few slices, as required, for the next WUs.

Gildardo,

It's been a while since I updated from the 4.19 version of BOINC, and I know some features have been added that 4.19 didn't have. To check on the "abort", first, on the "Work" tab, click on (highlight) the WU, then look on the panel on the left to see if an "abort" button appears. If it does not, ... then I'm at a loss. You'll either have to wait and see if it disappears in time, or uninstall 4.19 and upgrade to a newer BOINC.

Well, what can I say, there is no left panel :) ... All I get is the option "Show Graphics" . I'll update the client -- I know that'll automatically abort whatever it's been working on and request a new work unit. Besides, I think I may like a little more functionality than what 4.19 had.

Thanks for the replies.

Ah... no, that one doesn't have the abort option included. You can do either of two things here: reset the project with the reset button (in BM, Projects tab. You do have that button. ;)), but that will kill all units for Einstein in your queue, while any at "ready to report" will go afoul then as well. If you are on dial up or other slow internet, this is the worst thing to do, as you will have to download the 7MB main datafile again that Michael is talking about.

In such case, the easiest thing to do is navigate to BOINC\\projects\\einstein.phys.uwm.edu in Windows.
Stop BOINC from running. Just exit it completely at this point.
Now delete all files in the Einstein directory that end on dat
Restart BOINC.

It should give you some error messages in the Messages tab, but ignore those.
Then it should download new work for you.

Well, thank you for the reply, but I've just installed the latest BOINC for Windows, aborted the old unit, and then the scheduler very nicely had me restart the same unit it sent last. I did lose the work done last night, but as it was only a few percent, I can live with that.

Also, fortunately I have a cable modem connection.

Wow, the latest client has a lot of bells and whistles.

Gildardo,

Just don't go gaga playing with all the new buttons before reading up on their functions and ramifications. That scheduler can quickly get mighty confused by such actions. My advice - let it work for a while, and see how efficiently it runs things.

Happy crunching, and thanks for your contributions to Einstein@Home!

Michael R.
