By beginning of next year (2011) we will raise the "minimum required BOINC Core Client version" to 5.8.0. Older Clients will not get work from Einstein@home from then on. If you are still using an older BOINC Core Client, please upgrade! For discussion, see this forum thread.

Raise of minimum required BOINC Core Client version
)
I tried to update and it wiped my Boinc program out--can't access--will not run--have been unable to get anything going again--I could go in and remove the program, but then how do I reinstall--I don't happen to be very computer literate.
I got the original program installed in 2002 and somehow managed to change over from classic to the newer system, but that was all years ago--so my advice for the many others with my level of computer literacy is be VERY, VERY careful.

Sounds like you just need to go here:

See this FAQ, Bill. When using step 1, you'll need to download this BOINC version, and use it to repair install your present version with. After that you can uninstall BOINC through Windows Add/Remove Programs and install the latest BOINC 6, available from the link Michael gave you.

I am using version 6.10.58 on my Mac and it has not received any work for Einstein@Home. Do I need to detach and reattach to the project?

Do you have any other projects on that machine?

I also have SETI. It is currently working on two tasks but has not downloaded any new ones.

SETI broke, rather comprehensively, last night, and won't have any new work available until probably next week.
BOINC v6.10.58 is plenty new enough, and you do not need to detach/reattach because of the 'minimum version' subject of this thread.
If you are not getting work from Einstein, I suggest you review the trouble-shooting steps in Not Getting WU's For Ages Now, and if that doesn't provide a clue, continue the conversation in that Getting Started area - it's more appropriate than this 'broadcast news' area.

I think SETI has its weekly outage. They just put on line two new servers, Oscar and Carolyn, donated by the users and a third one, Synergy, donated by the GPU Users group. So they have some teething troubles but I am still crunching their WUs both on my Linux host and a Solaris virtual machine.

No, this one isn't planned.
If I may be permitted to post news about another project here:
A disk failed in SETI's main workunit storage appliance, 'Gowron'. No tasks can be downloaded until the disk is replaced and the appliance (I think it's a NAS device, rather than a standard server) put back online. All SETI website pages are offline, as well, although uploading and reporting is still possible as normal.
