Hallo !
My modernized PC got a graphics card NVIDIA GT440 with 1GB VRAM and uses Win7x64Prof and BOINC 6.12.26(x64). It runs so far very well, but there are two problems:
1) There is “No usable GPU found†by BOINC, declared so in the “Event logâ€.
But this GPU is listed as CUDA capable, the driver is the actual 8.17.12.7061 dated 07.04.11 and is MS certified, the card resides in the first (blue) PCIE 2.0x16 slot and the program GPU-Z does indicate it as CUDA capable. Normal working is fine. So, why not working for BOINC???

2) Changings in the “Computing Preferences†of my account, done from this PC are not sent back to the PC, even after reinstallation/repair of the program and clicking on BOINC Manager/Advanced/Read config file or xxxx/Read local prefs file, Network activity is allowed always etc., etc..

At now I´m somewhat perplex. Do you have any idea how to cure this?

Looking forward to your interesting recommendations
Martin

Did you install BOINC in Protected Application Execution (service) mode?

"Read config file" reads cc_config.xml (if present).

"Read local prefs file" reads global_prefs_override.xml (if present).

If global_prefs_override.xml is present, it overrides all online preferences that exist in the file. To revert to using the online preferences, you'll have to click "Clear" in the local preferences window or delete the global_prefs_override.xml file.

I think the MS drivers does not include the stuff needed to crunch with, just the stuff needed to see the screen with. Go to Nvidia.com and download the latest drivers for your gpu and load them, make sure you exit Boinc before hand and then after you restart Boinc see if it finds the card.

This is one case where "the latest" is not necessarily "the best".

Go to nVidia's 'Advanced Search' page http://www.nvidia.de/Download/Find.aspx?lang=de: fill in your card details, operating system (remember the 64bit version of Windows 7) and language. Choose the v266.58 WHQL driver towards the bottom of the list: that's the one which has been found to be the best of the current crop for BOINC use.

yup!

unless you got a brand new 5xx modell which is not supported in drivers prior to 27x.xx..

Hallo Chaps!
Many thanks for your responses. They were of help.

Hallo Gundolf!
Thank you for this really immediate response!

No, I didn´t take any precautions during installation, I just followed the installation procedure and that was very straight forward.
Gundolf, by your hint I became able to edit the xml-files.
I found: the config files on my PC does not become updated over the net, also now with a full running system. But I learned to edit them. You can easily check it by changing some values in your computing-adjustments in your account, for example for “Disk: use a mostâ€. Neither the update bottom in the BOINC-Manager, nor a reboot of the PC bring up the changed value.

Hallo Richard!
I did as you recommended. But after installation it was in no way better. I left him in.

So I safed the complete folder from C:\ProgrammData\BOINC on a separate disk, deinstalled BOINC and cleaned the registry from any looking, sounding or smelling like BOINC. The installation of a fresh downloaded version of BOINC 6.12.26(x64) was straight forward as before. After store back the folder C:\ProgrammData\BOINC to its original place, the program immediately did except the graphics card and started with downloading BRP3 CUDA-files. From that time on it´s running smooth and safely.
The PC with a i3-2100 CPU @ 3.1GHz and the GT440 graphics card consumes 95W primary power – only 10% of that needs the CPU - and my pre-estimation from the first results shows about 5[Cobblestone/Wh], which, I think, is not so bad. Compared with the old, crashed PC that´s about a factor of 40 better. And there is still the chance to make it a bit better by fine tuning.

Many thanks for your help and I´m looking forward to your interesting comments.

That's not quite correct.

global_prefs.xml does reflect the entries in the (global) online Computing preferences. However, as I said, corresponding entries in global_prefs_override.xml override the online ones (as the file name suggests:-).

cc_config.xml is a strictly local file that has no online counterpart. It doesn't even exist in a default installation.

Gundolf
