Being fairly new to Einstein@home I need need help with my ability to "suspend" or "resume" individual tasks.Previously I was able to do this, but, my last download, it seems like an "all or nothing" to suspend or resume.
Although I'm retired, there are other, multiple tasks I need to perform during daytime hours and between them, I run Einstein, and at night, giving 100% of computer time to this a bug or a new protocol?
Since I am not proficient at navigating E@home. please feel free to e-mail me www.mixednutsduo@roctetmail.com or gmail.com (Same prefix, different domain) John H

Problem with "suspend" or "resume" individual tasks

Hi John, welcome to the project.

Why do you feel you need to suspend individual tasks? It's not really normal to intervene manually like that. BOINC runs the science apps at low priority so they will quite happily use the spare CPU cycles without unduly impacting on the normal tasks for which you use your computer. Unless you are doing some very CPU intensive things as part of your normal activities, it is quite unlikely that you will even notice BOINC running in the background. If you do have very CPU intensive tasks in your normal mix, there are a number of ways (through preference settings) that you can control BOINC so that manual intervention is quite unnecessary. If you would like to tell us what you use your computer for, I'm sure someone will be able to recommend suitable preference settings.

Maybe you are talking about suspending the project rather than any individual tasks. Go to the tasks tab of BOINC Manager (Advanced view), select any task you like and click on the 'suspend' button. The highlighted task will be suspended and the button will change to 'resume'. Click it again and the task will be resumed. If you go to the projects tab and select the project, you will be able to suspend the entire project (all tasks) with a single click. Why would you bother to do that when you could set the preference for 'Suspend work while computer is in use?' to 'Yes' in your computing preferences in the website? You would then be free of the burden of doing it manually.

So are you saying that, during the day, when you want to use your computer to do your normal work, you manually suspend tasks, one by one? You really don't need to worry about that. Just use your computer normally and BOINC will get out of the way when it needs to. If you really don't want BOINC running during certain hours of the day, there's a preference setting to do that. Go to your account page on the website and follow the links to various preferences. Read through what's available and ask questions about any particular setting you don't fully understand.

Probably neither. You just need to look more carefully at the various tabs and menu items in BOINC Manager (advanced view). As well as that, you need to look at and think about the various preference settings available to you. You have the choice to do that locally within BOINC Manager, or globally on the website. Global settings are better if you have multiple computers to control. If you use local settings, they will override global settings for the computer on which you set them. With just one computer, local preferences are fine.

Cheers,
Gary.
