I am running E@H with BOINC manager 4.45 on a Windows XP machine with an HP LaserJet 1320 printer. After BOINC has been running for some time, I can't print anything. I just get an uninformative "printer error" message. I don't know what triggers this, but perhaps it has something to do with communications with the scheduler. Any suggestions? I would like to be able to print.

Make sure BOINC Manager is set to "Run Based on Preferences", and check the specific project. Select your account and look at preferences to make sure your computer runs BOINC only when idle.
This should allow you to print whenever necessary.
