Please register YOUR support for eLISA!

In September, the European Space Agency will begin the formal competition for its second "large" satellite mission, L2. The space-based gravitational-wave observatory eLISA (evolved Laser Interferometer Satellite Antenna) will be one of the contendors. There is a web site where members of the public can register their support for eLISA. This takes just a minute, and is an easy way for you to support future efforts to detect and study gravitational waves and gravitational-wave sources!

Hi Patrick,

thanks for adding the link. Note that this is the old eLISA webpage. A new webpage will be available in the next few days or so.

If you want to learn a little more about the eLISA mission concept and what it wants to achieve, follow the existing links on the supporters page, or have a look at this really nice video.

Cheers,
Benjamin

Yes the NGO Project was set in May 2012 which was decided from ESA.

Hi Sunny129, glad you

Hi Sunny129,

glad you asked. The White Paper for the "Gravitational Universe" science theme will be submitted to the European Space Agency (ESA) later this month. It will have a list of scientists supporting the mission, some of them very well known–like Stephen Hawking or Kip Thorne–and other scientists (like myself) which are not that prominent but still think that it is important that eLISA flies. That is the one side.

On the other side, the message is even stronger if the eLISA consortium can show ESA that a space-based gravitational-wave observatory is supported by people from all around the world. Thus, these science enthusiast may sign up as "eLISA friends". By doing so, they show that eLISA sparks their imagination and gets them excited about fundamental research, astronomy, and gravitational waves. I can imagine that White Paper might say something like "This White Paper is also supported by 1485 eLISA friends online." and give a link to the list of supporters. So your "vote" could make a difference.

Cheers,
Benjamin

Has anyone else who's signed

Has anyone else who's signed this gotten a free issue of Science in the mail? One just showed up in my mailbox; and the coincidental timing of it arriving 2 weeks after signing the petition makes the eLISA people giving them my mailing address seem to be the least improbable way for it to have happened.

Hi all, the eLISA

Hi all,

the eLISA consortium has submitted its White Paper on the "Gravitational Universe" Science Theme and the eLISA mission to the European Space Agency (ESA) at the end of last week.

You can download and read the paper at this page, where you will also find further information on the mission and the LISA pathfinder mission which is due to fly in 2015. LISA Pathfinder will demonstrate the key technologies to be used in eLISA.

You will find your contribution as a supporter of the eLISA White Paper on page 2 of the document. There you'll find a list of the authors, contributors, the most prominent supporters, and a link to the internet page with all supporters, including all of you who signed up.

Cheers,
Benjamin

That's a great reference Ben.

That's a great reference Ben. In a way, black holes are simple - just mass and spin. Of course there's still quite a lot of science in 'just' that, there being so many permutations. I want to hear one of those EMRI's : whole stars getting swallowed over some hours, with a burp at the end !! :-)

I also note the mention of the LSST, which I never knew of until now. Another cool project.

Cheers, Mike.

This evening I received an

This evening I received an email from Karsten Danzmann for the eLISA Consortium. If I understood correctly, the search for gravitational waves has been chosen for the L3 mission. :)

I suppose the content of the email is not privileged, hence I hope Karsten will not mind me posting the content here:

Quote:

Dear Jens Alexander,

many of you may have heard that yesterday ESA announced the selection of the Science Themes for the L2 and L3 launch opportunities.

http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Space_Science/ESA_s_new_vision_to_study_the_invisible_Universe

They selected the "Hot and Energetic Universe" for L2 and "The Gravitational Universe" for L3.

This is a great success for us and we should all be very happy that the hard work over the last two decades refining the LISA concept paid off.
We now have an approved slot and are a firm part of the program!
That is a major achievement and I want to congratulate everybody on this outcome.

On behalf of the whole LISA community I would like to thank you for supporting the White Paper. More than 4000 signatures strengthened our case a lot.

This selection means secure development for the next 20 years and enough time to do it right.
And indeed, with the selection of the mission concept expected in 2020, there is not much time to spare and the real work is starting now!

The first and foremost priority for our community is now to concentrate on LISA Pathfinder and do all we can for a successful flight.
And then in 2015, after the big success, we are well positioned to refine the remaining technology challenges and get the mission concept perfected for 2020.

We will keep you informed about important future developments. Great discoveries are to be made. In the meantime you should have a look at our new video: http://youtu.be/YyofTn7tZjo - together we will unveil the hidden secrets of the universe.

Best wishes,
Karsten Danzmann
for the eLISA Consortium

There is a an excellent depiction of eLISA and ATHENA. I understand that eLISA is a listening device, but what is ATHENA.

Please tell me what their functions are in as simple language as you can, so when I brag something to the old lady next door I don't say something dumb.

Hallo

Hallo fadedrose!

Quote:
..... , but what is ATHENA ?

Athena (Advanced Telescope for High ENergy Astrophysics) is a telescope of the next generation for x-rays as Chandra or XMM-Newton, the currently very successfuly running missions in space.
X-rays are electromagnetic waves like light, but of much, much shorter wavelenght, about 1/2000. These telescopes have to be placed in space, because x-rays become absorbed by the athmosphere. The focussing element at these very short wavelenth are not lenses or mirrors as for light waves, but mirrors, where the waves become glanced at the surface of the mirror.(I hope my english isn´t too bad.)

If you like,read more here.
And thoose, who are more deeply interested in science look here. Ups, 94 pages.

Kind regards and happy crunching
