Seems like a very general platform these days... Can it really be 'not found', or is this a temporary glitch?

No, it's not a temporary glitch. Einstein doesn't have 64bit applications, hence why it won't send one to you. Depending on the BOINC version you use, it should send you the 32bit application instead. You will need to have the ia32 libraries installed on your computer.

That's strange, I have a Debian 4.0 installation myself, also using the 5.4.x version from Debian, and it's running 32 bit clients ok.

Did you use the BOINC package supplied by Debian (installable via aptitude)?

Oh well, I just saw that I have an app_info.xml file , that could perhaps explain why it works for me:

This files goes to /var/lib/boinc-client/projects/einstein.phys.uwm.edu

The other missing files can be downloaded from here :

http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/download/einstein_S5R4_6.02_i686-pc-linux-gnu_2

All need the executable bit set.

You can also download a BOINC version 5.10.x or higher that will automatically download 32 bit apps (no need for app_info.xml file), BUT the only versions avaliable for Debian 4.0 stable do NOT include a GUI (command line interface only): http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php (search for "Older Linux" on that page).
