I am running windows vista home premium on my desktop and laptop. I am running BOINC 5.8.16 on each. On my desktop, BOINC has now begun to show "partial" graphics when it is EaH's turn to roll up on my screensaver. I have noticed that it also does this if I call for BOINC to "display graphics" as well. It started doing this about 5 or 6 days ago. When the screensaver rolls up EaH, I get the corner graphics, the clock and the %completed seen to be counting and working, but the "constellation sphere" does not show at all.
On my laptop, EaH displays and works normally. BOINC is sharing time with Sett at Home on each computer.
Does anyone have any information on this, or a possible fix or work-around ?

Partial Graphics with Einstein at Home on my desktop ?

Did anything change on the affected computer at that time? MS Updates?

Do you see the same behavior when you hit show graphics in the manager or is it in the screen saver only?

Vista is a fickle creature. It's driving me bonkers right about now.

Graphics drivers up to date? DirectX up to date?

What graphics hardware do you have?

I'm not the best person to troubleshoot graphics issues. But I'll give it a shot.

Thank you for responding - at least I know someone reads these posts.
Microsoft updates Vista automatically, and I know I have had some updates in the past two weeks. But the same updates were also on my laptop, and it is not affected by this problem at all.

The problem exists both in the screen-saver and in "show graphics".

I have the latest drivers for my ATI Radeon X1050 display adapter, and I have directx on this pc.

I hope this information will give you some clue as to the problem.

Thanks for your help and your response.

One further follow-up item on

One further follow-up item on this issue.

I detached from E@H, then re-booted the PC,
and then re-attached to the project. But the
results are the same - I get all of the outside
graphics, but the rotating constellation sphere
still will not show.

While I was at it, I added QMC@H to my BOINC
projects, and it displays perfectly, as does
Seti@H.

Couple additional questions

Couple additional questions now that I think about it. How is BOINC installed and where is it installed to?

One thing you can try is to run down your cache of work (set everything to no new work). Uninstall BOINC. Trash the entire directory. Reinstall BOINC. If you save the account_*.xml files (where * is the project URL) you can drop those into the new directory while BOINC isn't running, start it up and you'll be automagically attached to your projects again.

I have never gotten the screen saver to work on my Vista laptop. That's why I say Vista is a fickle creature.

If you're adventurous, you can try upgrading to the current alpha client. Or you can try an older release version (offered on that same linked page). If you do downgrade, you need to uninstall first then install the older version. Upgrades can be done over the top, downgrades can't.

Rom (one of the developers) has told me that graphics will be hit and miss under Vista. Graphics support for Vista really isn't planned until version 6 of the client, which is getting a rewrite of the graphics code. I'm not sure on the timeline for that. I thought I read someplace Q3 of this year, but I could be thinking of something else.

Hello Kathtryn;

BOINC is installed as a program in my program files directory. I used the default locations and suggested installation guidelines.

I may try what you suggested, but I since I have E@H working OK on my laptop, I have for now decided to leave it running there, and I have changed my desktop to run QMC@H.

Thanks for your help and your interest.
