Have been running BOINC for quite some time on diverse Windows & Linux Systems. Installed Ubuntu 8.04 for AMD64 & install BOINC & downloaded a series of tasks to run but got an immediate completion & error for each. For example:
Wed 30 Apr 2008 11:33:24 PM CEST|Einstein@Home|Computation for task h1_0992.40_S5R3__289_S5R3b_0 finished

Wed 30 Apr 2008 11:33:24 PM CEST|Einstein@Home|Output file h1_0992.40_S5R3__289_S5R3b_0_0 for task h1_0992.40_S5R3__289_S5R3b_0 absent

So I uninstalled the Ubuntu supplied BOINC (5.10.45), downloaded & installed http://boincdl.ssl.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_ubuntu_5.10.45_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh

Downloaded a new series of tests, and got the same problem again.

Not a HW problem, as I run a dual-boot with XP and the Windows version works fine.

Any hints anyone?

Your computers are hidden, so I can't take a look at your result list. However, I'm pretty sure that 64 bit *buntu doesn't have the ia32 libs installed out of the box. Use synaptic (is that what *buntu uses?) or apt get to install them.

Thanks for the response, Kathryn. Yes, Hardy Heron uses Synaptic Package Mgr. As mentioned, though, after that failed, I also tried downloading the version 5.10.45 for Linux x64 (for deb-based Linux systems: "Debian and Ubuntu: package names boinc-client, boinc-manager" see link in previous post), but got the same result. Computational error, no output file.

The system is (AMD)x64, not i(ntel)a32. Are you indicating, that there is no functional 64bit version of BOINC for x64 systems?

I was thinking I'd failed to provide some user/group permission somewhere, which was preventing the BOINC from fulfilling its duties properly.

There is no 64bit application here at Einstein, it'll download the 32bit application even when you use a 64bit BOINC. But to run this on your system you need the correct 32bit libraries.

Jord & Kathryn, thank you both for the info. Added the ia32 libs & it works now. But, why are there no 64bit apps? Would this not make for a greater computational & shorter turnover time for x86-64 systems? Are there not quite a few of these systems out there these days?

It would seem that you could crunch a greater chunk faster & with less overhead in native 64bit than in 32.

Best take a look at this thread on that. It explains all of it.

Well, I read that, including the last entry from 14 Feb 2008. There are now several native 64-bit OSs on the market, so that aspect should no longer be a problem. The downloaded 32-bit app, which requires additional ia32 libs to be downloaded/installed, before the numbers can be crunched. This seems silly to me.

In my case, a 10% increase in performance would be a hefty chunk of additional WUs completed.
