nvidia GPU GTX 770 not flagging any "GPU" jobs under tasks

Anonymous
Topic 227636

I recently ressurected a NVIDIA GTX 770.  In my computer list it properly displays the GPU in question however when I use the "location home" and tick "Gamma-ray pulsar binary search #1 (GPU)" i do not see any "GPU" tasks in boinc manager flagged with GPU.  I know this is due to something I have done or failed to do.  I do have "use NVIDIA gpu" checked in the "project" selection.  Any help/suggestions appreciated.

Does your NVIDIA GTX 770 have OpenCL 2.0 or 3.0 support?  I don't see any reference to OpenCL in the NVIDIA specs for your card.   https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/graphics-cards/geforce-gtx-770/specifications/

I believe this is a 'must have' for E@H GPU tasks.  I may be wrong, but somebody else can let you know for sure.

.....[EDIT].....

Yes, it does have OpenCL 3.0 support   https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-gtx-770.c1856

.....[EDIT].....

Make sure that the "location home" is selected on all pages (project and computing).

You may want to show us your Event Log's first 30 lines (or so) when starting out as that will give us a hand in solving your problem.

Also, could you show your Project and Computing URL's in combined view?  That could help in solving your problem, too.

run this command to install

George, yes his card supports OpenCL 3.0, but even if it didn't, he should still get the older v1.20 app which is the app for the older cards with only OpenCL 1.2

but it's also dependent on having the OpenCL driver components installed. for Nvidia drivers, this wasn't available until the 465 driver branch. he has 470, so that's good. however, the Ubuntu provided Nvidia drivers don't include the OpenCL components and you have to install them separately.

run this command to install the OpenCL components, and then you should start getting tasks. (might need a reboot, or at least restart boinc)

sudo apt install ocl-icd-libopencl1

sorry for delayed reply but i had a previous commitment.

anyway you were "spot on".  opencl was needed but abscent.  here is what i did:

1.  sudo apt -y install clinfo

2.  sudo apt install ocl-icd-opencl-dev

3.  reboot

and as they say in some circles "ta dah"

you're getting a lot of errors. and it looks like a memory problem.

are you trying to run 2x tasks on the GPU? I think at only 2GB VRAM, you don't have enough VRAM to run 2 at a time. cut it back to 1 at a time.

oh and I forgot that the project holds back the newer app on anything less than Maxwell (CC5.0). so his kepler card is getting the 1.20 app as expected

I am now running 1 wu at a time (home location) ( gamma ray pulsar #1 gpu)
