FYI - I would have sent this to the support email address instead of this forum but there doesn't seem to be one.

Anyway FYI2 - I'm removing this screensaver. I don't mind sharing my down time but my computer is on it's knees. I look at the active tasks and einstein is using about 80% of the machine! That's not the deal. Bye bye.

Not happy!

Bye.

FYI, BOINC isn't a screen saver.

Maybe Jon's thread title

Maybe Jon's thread title should have been "Not well informed".

I wonder if this guy has one

I wonder if this guy has one of the units I'm waiting for validation and credits from. I'm running dual core AMDs and with both that's at 100%. Doesn't seem to affect what I do online, on my system etc etc etc. Misinformed might be the correct title.

Yep, using all unused CPU

Yep, using all unused CPU power is what BOINC is about, but as long as the project didn't use too much RAM, I could do anything while I was crunching; making MP3s, watching a video, even gaming. The priority is low enough so it doesn't hurt other applications.

Maybe he really meant the screen saver is killing his machine.

I had to turn the display off. When it came on or shut down it sometimes locked the system for minutes at a time. Sometimes I had to boot out.

Maybe, but to me it sounded as if he complained about the high CPU usage.

Sounds like a person that the

Sounds like a person that the "Don't use orally" warning on the Prep H is for......

The overview that the BOINC website provides is pretty clear..all one needs do is invest afew minutes of reading..then if one is still unclear, ask clarifying questions...

Oh well....

BOINC download is often

BOINC download is often offered as a screensaver
btw. . You always find it in the screensavers
category on freeware sites.

Wikipedia mentions the screensaver too.

And there is this "boinc.scr" file, which is
obviously a screensaver.

It depends much on your background wether you see
it as a screensaver or not.

So don't be mad if someone calls it a screensaver,
he is not totally wrong :-)

That is how I ended up installing BOINC on my boxes. I read about the Seti screensaver in an article (or somewhere) and it went from there...

Earlier when I said Jon might

Earlier when I said Jon might have titled this thread "Not well Informed" I was referring to the fact that Jon only joined May 2, yet without apparently attempting to understand the architecture of BOINC or its operability he concluded that BOINC was a cpu assassin and he wasn't going to put up with it. Before deciding to throw in the towel he might have asked some questions and sought some advice rather than project an attitude.
