Topic 194741

For the past few weeks two of my PCs have been unable to make use of the GPU and have the message "No work for GPU", and "No work is available for Hierarchical S5 all-sky GW search #5. Using BOINC 6.10.18. Also had the same problem with 6.10.17 and at least one version before that. I checked the preferences file at the server and confirmed that GPU is enabled there.
Both PCs use NVIDIA cards but of different versions - both have latest drivers installed.

What am I missing?

No work for GPU. No work is available for Hierarchical S5 all-s

My first thought was a left-over app_info.xml file, but there's no sign of that in your log.

There is not, and never has been, a GPU app for the GW searches - either the old #5, or the current #6.

To use your GPU, you need to agree to run the new "Arecibo Binary Pulsar Search (STSP)", otherwise known as ABP2 on these boards. Did you check for that in your preferences (in the appropriate 'venue' set, if you use more than one)?

Sorry, no, I meant the Einstein@Home preferences:

I hadn't previously come

Message 96691 in response to message 96690

I hadn't previously come across or used that set of configs - I see what you mean - #5 was checked but is greyed out, so I have now set up as;

Y.. Arecibo Binary Pulsar Search
Y.. Arecibo Binary Pulsar Search (STSP)
Greyed.. Hierarchical S5 all-sky GW search #5
Y.. Hierarchical S5 all-sky GW search #6

and run Update again.

Hopefully that will bring in new work for GPU by tomorrow.

I appreciate your help, thanks!

There is only a GPU App and

There is only a GPU App and work for ABP2, and the ABP2 workunit generators currently can't keep up with the demand for ABP2 work. I think what you see is just the effect of the server when it has no GPU work available, though the messages probably need to be clarified.

I am now getting lots of work

Message 96693 in response to message 96692

I am now getting lots of work from STPS ABP2. Yes, it does dry up periodically, then more arrives.

I expected that I would see work units for each of the CPUs (individual CPU cores) and separate work for the GPU. But (perhaps more cleverly) one CPU joins the GPU and the collectively perform one STPS work unit at a time, while the remaining CPU core works on a second work unit (Hierarchical S5). Not an issue - just interesting to see this co-join happening.

On my second PC (dual core processor + Nvidia NVS135M-128MB) I do not get any STPS work - server reports GPU needs at least 450MB of memory). Since the GPU is fixed at 128MB, I probably cannot do anything about that except to upgrade to better graphics card.

Thanks for your assistance Richard & Bernd.

It's a limitation, rather

Message 96694 in response to message 96693

It's a limitation, rather than designed , that the app needs a full CPU core plus the GPU. The app will be improved in the future to rely less and less on CPU calculations.

You should still get ABP2 tasks eventually , but they will be crunched on the CPU instead of on the GPU.

Currently the ABP2 tasks are crunched as fast by volunteers as they can be produced, so it's possible that until the workunit generators are upgraded, ABP2 units will be in short supply for some.
