For quite some time now (I haven’t been checking things often recently, so I’m not sure just how long) none of my G4 Macs have been getting work from this project. My preferences do not exclude any kind of work, and the hosts concerned are doing fine with their other projects. A typical response to a work request:
Mon May 7 14:48:04 2012|Einstein@Home|Message from server: No work sent Mon May 7 14:48:04 2012|Einstein@Home|Message from server: Gamma-ray pulsar search #1 is not available for your type of computer. Mon May 7 14:48:04 2012|Einstein@Home|Message from server: Binary Radio Pulsar Search (Arecibo) is not available for your type of computer.
Yet my G5 Mac—AFAIC the same “type of computerâ€, Darwin/PowerPC—hasn’t had any such problem. I’ve scanned the forums for an announcement or anyone’s report of a similar issue, but nothing caught my eye: did I miss something?

No work for G4s

Hi!
Currently we only have one type of apps that supports PowerPC Macs: the Gravitational Wave search. But even that one requires Mac OS 10.4 or higher , which only one of your hosts satisfies. Sorry, there are no plans to support older OSes right now, and I suspect that current BOINC versions also have limited support for them.
Cheers

Thanks for the response (and to Bernd for the Tech News posting).
Not just current BOINC versions, and not even limited support: I haven’t been able to get anything later than v5.10.x to run at all on these systems. (The newer versions I tried—late 5.x or early 6.x—seemed to install OK but wouldn’t run: no error messages, no nothing. It was only much later, AFAICT, that the posted system requirements were updated to reflect this reality.) It wasn’t a problem here until recently … at least there are a few projects left to which Panther/G4 hosts can still contribute.
