I am running the newest Boinc software and Einstein@Home project (both downloaded 27th Oct 2007). When I press on the button "Show graphics", I get a window which has all the standard text on all four corners of the window. It shows that the client is working and the data is being processed, BUT, there is "no" 3D sphere constellation graphics.

I have Vista Home Premium 32bit running on Core 2 Duo 3.3GHz with ATI Radeon X1950 Pro with the latest Driver as of 25th of Oct 2007. I also have 2GB of ram. I do not believe minimum requirements are a problem.

I am not sure what the problem is but I suspect that it is a graphics API problem of some sort. I may be wrong as I have not checked the literature in a while but from memory the BOINC projects use OpenGl API instead of DirectX. Another reason could be perhaps GPU optimisation for a specific brand like NVIDIA...?

Any help to shed some light as to why this is happening would be appreciated. I really wouldn't mind seeing it whenever I choose to, like everyone else I suppse.

No Constellation graphics in window - No 3D Sphere

Graphics are somewhat hit or miss currently on Vista. Some people have all sorts of problems. Other people have no problems at all.

This is supposed to be solved with the new graphics API to come out with BOINC version 6.

Do you know when ver 6 is coming out? Mine is ver 5.10.20.

Another thing to consider is that this is only affecting the Einstein@home project but none of my other ones. Could it truely be the Boinc application? Or would the bug be with the actual code-algorithm of the Einstein project?

The last time I asked, the projection was somewhere in the next ~2 months. Testing hasn't even started yet.

You could try the 4.15 Beta application. But since the graphics code hasn't changed, I doubt it'll do any good.

As for the original question of what is used, OpenGL or DirectX, it's OpenGL by default. Only Seti I think it was reverts back to DirectX if you do not have a lot of main memory in your machine and less than 2MB of videoRAM on your graphics card.

I too, have this problem.

I too, have this problem. Although I am running XP PRO. I am running the latest version of Einstein as I have been disconnected for quite some time and only just now been able to recommence crunching. :-)

I have a q6600 cpu, 2g of corsair ram and a 300g 7200 sata hdd. All with latest drivers etc.

*edit* I should mention that I'm using ver. 4.15

And which version of BOINC? What kind of video card? Are those drivers up-to-date?

Well, it's at least not

Well, it's at least not showing anything. How did you install BOINC? As a single user, multiple user or service install?

When using a multiple user install, only the person who installed BOINC can use the graphics/screen saver, all others can't.
When using a service install, by default BOINC won't show graphics/screen saver, you'd have to set the service up to interact with the desktop on the local account system under the log on option.

If all that is set up correctly, do you have any game that uses OpenGL as its renderer? Can you play that game? (Examples: Doom3, Quake4, Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, Far Cry etc.)

As far as I can recall, I just downloaded and installed off the home page of Einstein, SETI, or Rosetta, not sure which one though. I don't know anything about this service install you are talking about. Is it an option when doing an install? I don't remember seeing it at all.
I only have FarCry installed out of all those you mentioned. Everything is set to max settings and it runs sweetly.
Thanks for your help too, much appreciated. It doesn't bother me too much not to have the pretty sphere showing, just something to look at while merrily crunching away!
