RE: I agree absolutely

I agree absolutely with you in regard to desparately needing a replacement for the old 4.79 app, to bring it into compliance with the newer Boinc clients. :-)

I don't think we disagree at all. I am not so much advocating that 0.18 become "official" as I am advocating that something besides v.479 become "official". But I am advocating that it happens ASAP - else we will continue to frustrate and discourage new users. And, given "who's left" at Seti Classic, I doubt that many of them will care to delve into the issues being discussed here. They will simply expect everything to work like it's supposed to.

I see no good reason why we should settle for a replacement that is less efficient. IMO, there is still some tweaking needed to 0.18 before accepting it as the official replacement, that's all. It's just not good enough yet. It still "feels" like a rough, stopgap measure.

The Beta has worked flawlessly for me - albeit a little slower. It's v4.79 that has the problems (ATI, BOINC library, etc.) Sure, 0.18 could be improved. But, it's better than what we have now (cause it has fewer bugs).

Given BOINC's recent history with 5.2.X, I would think it would be OK to start with 0.18 and change to 0.19, 0.20, . . . 0.nn as improvements are made. I would just like to see some action.

If the 0.18 beta as is becomes the de facto app, automatically being downloaded and replacing something that works well for me and 1000s of others, it will leave me with a difficult choice, to crunch Einstein with 0.18 or not at all, and I'm not prepared to say on which side of that dilemma I would fall. I'm very sorry to say that.

I think it's time for another "Now, now Michael". You know you love this place as much as the rest of us do. And we all want improvement. We just differ on methods for getting there.

Another thought, if there really are a lot of v4.79 die hards like yourself, why couldn't Einstein offer an "anonymous platform" installation of it - where it would be installed like the Beta app is installed now. It seems like that would be relatively easy to do.

If it is decided to make the

If it is decided to make the 0.18 version the default I would like to request some means of opting out. May be something similar to the method used to run the Beta versions only in reverse. In my setup I don't encounter any of the bugs that make 4.79 so objectionable to others. I would rather not loose the efficiency of 4.79.

I'm not convinced that 0.18

I'm not convinced that 0.18 is ready for prime-time: I'm using 0.18 . . .

. . . and am not able to see the screensaver graphics. My screen saver shows either a blank screen or BOINC system status:

I also cannot use the "Show Graphics" button from within BOINC itself.

I'm willing to believe that this is some kind of configuration error, as I do not have a long history of experience with BOINC. However, I need help to troubleshoot this.

Hi John,

Are you saying you aren't running the BOINC screensaver (its set to something other than BOINC) or that the BOINC screensaver had been running but not at the time the error occurred? And how long is "a long time"?

Version 0.18 is supposed to fix the "graphics bug" but perhaps this is another variation of it. I'd like to find out more about this bug, would you mind sending BOINCs message logs to me? Those are the files "stdoutdae.txt" and "stderrdae.txt" in the BOINC folder, send them to wgdebug at yahoo.com.

Thanks,

Walt

Got them, thanks.

A quick question - what display adapter is in the machine and how current are the drivers?

Looks like there is a newer graphics driver.

Jord,

Thanks, they are indeed very recent, will give it a try later, maybe it's the solution to the problem,

John,
