Hi

I have only being using Einstein@Home for a few days and have accumulated some completed tasks.

However, for the past 36 hours, the Boinic Manager under Messages, has changed from "Resuming computation" to "Resuming network activity".

Work on the tasks appears to have stopped. What does "Resuming network activity" mean?

Thanks.

Network Activity

Resuming Network Activity means that BOINC is allowed to use the network (internet) again. That it only shows Resuming network activity, but no longer resuming computation can happen when you set your activity preferences wrong.

Please open BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Activity.
Check That the top option is set to "Run based on preferences" and that the bottom one is set to "Network activity based on preferences".

If that doesn't shake the computation loose, please check the Status columns in the Projects tab for Einstein@Home and the Tasks tab for any Einstein task you have. What are they saying?

Hello Jord Advanced

Hello Jord

Advanced view->Activity.
Check That the top option is set to "Run based on preferences" and that the bottom one is set to "Network activity based on preferences".>>

These are set as above and were when I went there.

Under the "Projects" tab, the "Status" column is empty. "Resource Share" shows 100%.

On the "Task" tab, there are two projects part way through showing progress percentages. These haven't moved for a couple of days. The status there shows "Suspended - user activity".

I clicked the "Update" button, which showed a 30 second countdown and then cleared the status column.

The screen saver when it starts, shows that tasks are suspended due to high CPU usage. The CPU is set to 50%, with almost nothing other than the system running.

Thanks for any comments.

Ah yes, that's the side effect of the "Suspend work if CPU usage is above 25%" preference setting. You can change that to 0 (zero) and not see it anymore.

(Btw, there's a fix for this in newer test versions, but you're better off with the recommended version.)

This status message means that BOINC has suspended crunching because it thinks your computer is "in use". Unfortunately "in use" doesn't necessarily mean "significant use". It just means that you have probably moved the mouse or touched the keyboard. Normal "office" type activities like word processing, browsing, email, etc, consume very few CPU cycles and the vast majority will go to waste if you choose the preference setting that suspends BOINC when the computer is "in use".

BOINC is designed to run at low priority "in the background" and is usually very good at "getting out of the way" when you really do need a lot of CPU cycles for your own work. If you allow BOINC to run during your normal activities, you would probably be hard pressed to even notice that BOINC was running. You should give it a try that way (set the preference to 'yes' and update) and see if you can actually notice the difference. This is in addition to the change that Jord suggested. Your tasks should progress much more quickly with both those changes in place.

Cheers,
Gary.

Hi folks OK, I have

Hi folks

OK, I have resolved the problem.

It appears that the last Apple iPhone update set up MobileMe, which was zapping 50% of the CPU use all the time.

Thanks for the great support and best wishes.
