I've installed linux over windows and changed the name. Is there any way of forcing a merge with the old data?
No and yes.
The no part goes like this: you can only merge two compuers that are similar enough. Eg. OS needs to be the strongly (mostly read as: exactly) similar, other HW changes need to be minor. So you can't merge Linux and windows hosts.
The yes part goes like this: it really doesn't mater what kind of change you do to a machine. It keeps host ID of any given project as long as you manage to transfer it to the new BOINC installation (the client_state.xml file). Random bits that need to be kept in mind:
* value has to be transfered
* vlue needs to be higher than value of
Number of times client has contacted server as found on Computer summary page
What you can do is to create a dummy boinc installation on your linux host. Then hand edit client_state.xml of that installation. Copy/paste section from your real BOINC installation and change the two fields mentioned above to the values of your former Windows host. Start BOINC and do a project connection. Data on project pages should change for former Windows host so that it would show up as Linux host. You will be able to merge these two hosts then.
