OK, I just installed Vista and boinc, and then tried to merge the old host and the new one, and I can't.
I was using XP. It would be nice if someone could update the merging code so Vista/XP could be merged together.
Just my 2c
EDIT: BOINC refuses to do anything on vista... it just downloads the wu(s), and just sits there because it does not download the other apps needed for the project.

Merging 2 computers with different OS's
)
This may not work in your case, but, last spring, when my old Gateway died, I moved the BOINC folder (that was on the Gateway) to my new computer. After that, I reinstalled BOINC on the new computer and everything worked. That is, all the BOINC data that was associated with the old Gateway transferred to the new host; and, the all of the WU's that were in cache on the Gateway were finished up on the new computer. And, afterward, as far as the project stats were concerned, it was "as if" the Gateway had never existed. In my case, both computers were running XP - but I think it might be worth a try in your case as well (assuming XP and Vista folders are compatible). Before, attempting it, however, I would strongly suggest backing up your existing BOINC folder(s), so you can "fall back" if you have trouble.
No, simply merging two hosts
)
No, simply merging two hosts with different OSs doesn't work. I tried to do that for my laptop after installing Linux but no way. I never had problems after a BOINC or Windoze reinstall but as soon as i switched to a different OS there was no way they would merge.
Can't help with your Vista problem unfortunately; I'm considering to try it out as well (via dual boot) but don't have any experience yet.
RE: BOINC refuses to do
)
Any possible reason for this in the messages? Everything looks ok on the server side, the scheduler has send the correct App (at least to host 796338). Any firewall blocking certain filetypes or a virus scanner lockig a file? You can try to download and install the App files manually from the old beta test package.

RE: RE: BOINC refuses to
)
I have no problems running BOINC on Vista. Note that it's running on RC1 or RC2, not the final release yet. I may have disabled the firewall, or just installed Vista as a "non-public" computer...don't remember.

General Hint about merging /
)
General Hint about merging / moving BOINC to another OS or upgraded System:
To do this without hassle, a Backup of the whole BOINC Directory should be created and stored in a safe location.
After the affected System is ready to run with the new Hardware and/or new OS, the Backup can be copied back and used normally.
That procedure will assure that there are no problems arising from significant System changes, even when moved across completely different architectures.
Of course, a suitable BOINC Binary must be installed over the existing one, if the OS changed. It will automatically download its appropriate Client Binaries and pick up work where the old System left it.
Even if the BOINC Cache has been crunched empty, the procedure will save the Computer ID's for all attached Projects and will avoid having unwanted and unmergable new ID's being created.
...as soon as an existing, unwanted Computer ID has no more work the Server is waiting for and all Results have been post-processed (no Results visible anymore under "This Computer's Results" Table), it can usually be deleted on almost all Projects (ClimatePrediction being an exception).
RE: That procedure will
)
My experience is a tad different: I'm running Linux AMD64 platform. I used to run BOINC for i686 platform. Recently I decided to run native x86_64 version. Vhen the native BOINC started, it immediately reset all the projects as the platform changed.
Normally when one changes platform and/or OS, she would have to get new project binaries as well and this is then desired behaviour. If one makes change which is supposed to be backward compatible (eg. change from i686 to x86_64) then she has to hand-edit the [pre]client_state.xml[/pre] in order to avoid project resets.

Strange, I went from SGI
)
Strange, I went from SGI Irix64 to Win32 and from Win32 x86 to Linux x86_64 without having similar Problems.
It's probably the safest solution to have BOINC run dry and then make the transition then.
Unfortunately, I can't even
)
Unfortunately, I can't even get two different Linux distributions to merge. I switched from Gentoo to Debian for reasons unrelated to BOINC (mainly my WLAN card not getting along with Gentoo at all, but also the fact that I'm more used to Debian and found out I really prefer the handling) and now I have a new host again... the 3. ID this poor little laptop has after switching from Windoze to Gentoo about a month ago. Well, it looks stupid but I can't help it...
